Sept. 21, 2016
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" They say that the postseason is where legends are born, and for at least one Penn State women's basketball alum the 2016 WNBA Playoffs will be an opportunity to add one more championship to the Lady Lion's trophy case.
While Maggie Lucas is on the mend after tearing her ACL on May 27, 2016, her Indiana Fever teammates will kick off postseason play with a win-or-go-home meeting with the Phoenix Mercury tonight (Sept. 21; ESPNews). The two preseason favorites in their respective divisions will meet for the right to play a second round series with either New York or Chicago.
The two teams met three times during the regular season, with Indiana claiming the first two meetings, but Phoenix earned a victory in the final contest.
Tanisha Wright will sit back and watch the opening round games on Wednesday (Sept. 21) evening, as the New York Liberty await the lower seed of the win-or-go-home games. The Liberty finished with the third best record in the WNBA at 21-13 overall.
Wright enjoyed another great season on the hardwood ââ'¬" her second in New York and 12th overall ââ'¬" moving into 13th on the WNBA's all-time assists chart. Her 1,231 helpers are just 27 shy of Katie Smith for No. 12 on the all-time regular season list. She averaged 6.7 points, 3.6 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game in 2016.
In her postseason career, Wright has added another 111 assists; needing just six more can enter the top-20 on the postseason rankings. She has added 328 points to her postseason ledger to go along 45 postseason steals, a total that is 22nd all-time on the WNBA's postseason list.
