UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's hockey team defeated the University of Guelph, 4-1, in an exhibition contest Saturday afternoon inside the Pegula Ice Arena.

"I think overall certainly pleased with the effort today, decent consistency throughout the whole game," head coach Josh Brandwene said. "A lot for us to learn, a lot for us to fine tune, but when you have eight newcomers and you get all them those kind of reps and those kind of minutes during a hockey game. That is an invaluable experience for us moving forward. We saw a lot of things today that were really good and a number of things that we knew we were going to have to build off of giving the fact that our preseason is pretty short with only a full week of official practice, so overall I'm really pleased."

Three Nittany Lions tallied a multi-point game as Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded three points (1g, 2a), while Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Kelly Seward (Williamsville, N.Y.) each posted one goal and one assist.

The Nittany Lion offense struck first with 5:49 left in the first period on a goal from Seward. On the goal, Bowman and Petersen were credited with assists.

Penn State added to its lead during the second period on goals from Meike Meilleur (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Petersen. Meilleur tallied her lone goal of the game at 1:23 into the second stanza with assists from Victoria Samuelsson (Leksand, Sweden) and Sarah Nielsen (Edina, Minn.). Petersen then made it a 3-0 game on a power play goal with 12:59 remaining in the second frame. Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minn.) and Seward picked up assists on Petersen's goal.

With 9:14 remaining in the second period, freshman goaltender Daniela Paniccia (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) took over in net for junior netminder Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.). Ehresmann finished the afternoon with 14 saves, while Paniccia recorded nine saves for the Nittany Lions over the final 29:14 of the game.

The Blue and White extended its lead to 4-0 at 5:54 into the third period on a power play goal from Bowman. The Nittany Lions held a 4-0 lead for a little over a minute as Kelly Gibbons put the Gryphons on the scoreboard at 7:15.
