POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Penn State women's hockey team dropped its season opener, 4-2, at No. 5 Clarkson Friday night inside the Cheel Arena. Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored her program-leading 44th goal in the game.
The Clarkson Golden Knights (1-0-0) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 2:19 into the first period on a goal from Corie Jacobson. Clarkson added to its lead midway through the first period on Rhyen McGill's first goal of the season at 9:57.
The Golden Knights scored twice within a 6:01-span to open the second period to extend their lead to 4-0. For Clarkson, Genevieve Bannon (0:55) and Michaela Pejzlova (6:01) each scored in the second stanza.
Penn State (0-1-0) got on the scoreboard at 13:20 into the second period on sophomore defenseman Kelsey Crow's (Minnetonka, Minn.) third career goal. Crow netted the power play goal with an assist from fellow classmate Victoria Samuelsson (Leksand, Sweden).
The Nittany Lion offense cut the Golden Knight lead to two on a goal from Bowman at 2:20 into the third period. Bowman's goal Friday marked the fifth-straight game with a goal for the senior captain dating back to last season.
Junior netminder Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) tallied 39 saves for the Blue and White Friday night.
The Nittany Lions went 1-for-8 on the power play, while the Golden Knights went 2-for-11.
The two teams meet again tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. inside the Cheel Arena to close out the first-ever series between the two programs.
