UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Hitting the Course for the last time before the Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, MN, Tessa Barrett (20:11) led a 1-2-3 sweep as Elizabeth Chikotas (20:14) and Jillian Hunsberger (20:17) helped the No. 8 Penn State women's cross country team to a first-place finish at the Penn State National Open.

"I told them (the women) to stay a little conservative the first half and see how the race places out," said head coach John Gondak.

"We moved into position where they ended up being 1-2-3."

All-American Tessa Barrett's time of 20:11 tied for the third-best performance at the Penn State National Open in meet history. Barrett equaled the mark set by West Virginia's Keri Bland in 2008 and trails only Guelph's Lindsay Carson (20:07) from 2008 and Providence's Kim Smith who completed the 6K course in a meet record time of 19:46 back in 2003.

The Nittany Lion sweep led the Penn State women to a first-place finish ahead of several ranked teams including No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 25 Ole Miss and No. 30 West Virginia.

"Our fourth and fifth had a great day to seal up the win for us," said Gondak.

Rounding out the scoring for the Nittany Lions were Kathryn Munks (20:05) in 19th-place and Greta Lindsley (20:55) in 22nd-place.

Also competing for Penn State were Julie Kocjancic (21:20) and Rachel Banks with a time of 21:38.

"We had a specific plan," said Gondak. "We were going to let Tim (McGowan) and Colin (Abert) get out and race out towards the front and both of them had a top-15 finish."

Timothy McGowan (eighth-place/25:11) and Colin Abert's (12th-place/25:15) top-15 finishes led the way for the men's sixth-place finish.

The men scored 206 points, placing them ahead of Villanova (299) who is receiving votes in the USTFCCCA Coaches Poll.

Rounding out the scoring for the Penn State men were John McGowan (25:57) in 29th-place, Bobby Hill (26:06) in 57th-place and Conrad Lippert (26:31) in 80th -place.

Also competing for Penn State were Brandon Tubby (26:35) and Jaxson Hoey with a time of 26:48.

"It (Big Ten) is going to be a battle on the women's side," said Gondak.

"We're going to go in and give it our best, and the team that prepares the most, has the right mind set and is ready to go on that Sunday is going to pull out the win."

The Nittany Lions will have a week off before heading back to Minneapolis, MN to compete in the 2016 Big Ten Championships on Oct. 30 at Les Bolstad Golf Course.
