UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's hockey team opened its 2016-17 home slate with a 3-3 overtime tie against the Boston University Terriers Friday night inside the Pegula Ice Arena.

Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) and Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) each scored one goal and recorded one assist, while Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minn.) netted a goal. In net for the Nittany Lions, Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) recorded a 29-save outing.

Penn State (1-3-1) scored once in each period during regulation, while BU (2-1-1) tallied a pair of goals in the second period and one goal in the third period.

Sutton put the Nittany Lions up 1-0 with 8:02 left in the first period on her first goal of the season. The junior defenseman received a pass from Bowman off the boards on the right side of the ice and then she fired a shot from the blue line and into the bottom-left corner of the net for the Nittany Lion tally.

Penn State held the 1-0 lead until BU scored twice within a 3:24-span to open the second period. For BU, Mary Parker tied the game at one at 1:09 on her second goal of the season and then Alexis Crossley scored her first goal of the season on the power play to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead.

Down 2-1, Bowman recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the season, and the 49th goal of her career, at 10:09 to tie the game at two goals apiece. On the goal, Bowman redirected a pass from Irene Kiroplis (Georgetown, Ontario, Canada) past BU goaltender Erin O'Neil from close range.

The Nittany Lions then took a 3-2 lead on Petersen's fourth goal of the 2016-17 season at 4:49 in the third period. After freshman Brooke Madsen (Eagan, Minn.) played the puck to Petersen in the neutral zone, Petersen moved up the ice before firing a shot past O'Neil from the right faceoff dot.

With 11:30 left in regulation, BU's Maddie Elia tied the game at three on her third goal of the season.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net again down the final 11:30 of regulation sending the game into overtime. During the overtime period, Penn State outshot BU, 3-2, but both goaltenders kept the opposing offenses off the scoreboard to keep the 3-3 tie intact.

The two teams meet again tomorrow inside the Pegula Ice Arena with puck drop set for 2 p.m. The Penn State women's hockey team will be hosting a free post-game skate following tomorrow's game.
