UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Lions recorded their second straight under par round at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Saturday. The team sits in eighth after a 1-under second round puts the team at minus four overall.
Sophomore Charles Huntzinger (Duluth Ga.) leads all but one golfer after his second round score of 68 places him at 10-under. The only blemish, a bogey on 16, was countered with five birdies including one on the 10th hole which he eagled during Friday's opening round.
The highlight of the day for the Lions was their second eagle of the event recorded by sophomore JD Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) on the par 5, 517 yard 14th hole. Hughes ended with a 71 placing him at even par for the tournament. Junior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) and freshman Ryan Davis (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) both shot a 2-over 74, while senior Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) finished with a 75.
Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa) had a stretch of six holes that included four birdies and two pars to cap off his best round playing as an individual with a two-under 70.
Virginia fired off an 19-under second round to finish 11 strokes ahead of second place Missouri and 14 strokes the better of host East Tennessee State, who sits in third.
Ahead of Huntzinger on the player leaderboard is Virginia's Derek Bard. Both golfers shot a 66 on Friday which was followed up by a 67 from Bard in round two. A three-way tie ensues for third with UNCW's Thomas Eldridge, VCU's Jamie Clare and Tennessee's Lorenzo Scalise.
The Blue and White will begin the final round of competition Sunday morning.
