UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; October 2, 2016 ââ'¬" The Penn State women's tennis team completed day two matches at the Penn Invitational. The team will wrap up matches today, Sunday, October 2 in Philadelphia, Pa.
Five players continued competition in singles matches. Devan McCluskey (Phoenix, Az.) fell to Sarah Dreyfuss of Penn 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 16. Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) lost to Brooke Pilkington of UD 6-3 6-3. Shannon Hanley (Kensington, Md.) won against Sara Komer of UD 3-6 6-1, 10-7, but fell to Natalia Perry of W&M 6-3, 7-5. Annie Jaskulski of UD defeated Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China) 7-6(3), 7-6(7) Samantha Smith (Cary, N.C.) was victorious against Caroline Lynch 6-2, 7-6 and went onto defeat Marta Kowalska of Penn 6-2, 4-6, 10-5. Sammi Smith is set to take on Olaya Inclan Solis of SJ at 9am and Bennett Dunn will face Sunday Sweet (UD) in singles.
Head Coach Chris Cagle commented on the second day matches. "Today was a day of many experiences on the court. We hope to get in more quality tennis singles matches tomorrow to wrap up the tournament. I am excited to see Sammi still competing to win her flight and look forward to tomorrow's play."
Penn State had a pair of Nittany Lions compete in the doubles quarterfinals. Zuhse, Dunn defeated Faure/Thaler of W&M in the Quarterfinals 6-4, but lost in the semifinals to Morozova/Livianu of SJ 6-1.
After wrapping up matches at the Penn Invitational, the team will prepare for the ITA Regionals in Norfolk, Va.
