SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Senior Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alb.) tallied twice as Penn State University tied the third-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 3-3, in a non-conference men's ice hockey affair this evening from the Compton Family Ice Arena.

The game was paced by Richard's entire line as freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) picked up an assist on each goal by the senior. Richard and Smirnov each finished the game with a plus-2 rating.

"Rocket [Dylan Richard] was great, I thought all of them played really well," commented head coach Guy Gadowsky following the game. "[David] Goodwin was winning pucks, [Denis] Smirnov was making great plays and a huge game by Rocket, obviously and against a really great team."

The Nittany Lions move to 2-1-1 on the year while the Irish now stand at 3-1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Freshman Nikita Pavlychev (Yaroslavl, Russia) banged home a rebound on the doorstep just seven seconds into a power-play opportunity for the 1-0 lead at 2:16 of the first period.
  • Notre Dame responded with a short-handed score at 15:14 of the opening frame as Jake Evans collected a rebound score after Dawson Cook started the play by intercepting a pass in the defensive zone and going in on a break-away.
  • After a flourish of chances by Notre Dame, sophomore defenseman Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) chipped the puck into the neutral zone and Richard skated it down and entered the offensive zone with Smirnov on his left. Richard dished to Smirnov and Notre Dame net-minder Cal Petersen went with it giving Richard an open net after the return pass and a little tic-tac-toe gave PSU the 2-1 lead at 10:35 of the second period.
  • The Nittany Lions then made things 3-1 as Richard knocked home a loose puck out in front of the crease at 18:08 of the second frame. The goal was reviewed to see if sophomore Vince Pedrie (Rochester, Minn.) tipped the puck with a high-stick, but the goal stood. Smirnov added the second assist on the play.
  • Notre Dame came right back just 39 seconds later as Andrew Oglevie lit the lamp at 18:47 for the 3-2 score at the end of the second period.
  • Jordan Gross tied the game at 3-3 off a great drop pass from Evans at 12:28 of the third period.
  • The overtime period saw each team kill off a penalty and goalies Peyton Jones and Cal Petersen each making big saves during odd-man rushes.

GOALTENDING

  • Freshman Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) collected a new career-high 30 saves and remains unbeaten at 2-0-1 on the season while Petersen stopped 29 pucks to run his record to 3-1-1.

"[Peyton Jones] played extremely calm, that was a huge save [in overtime]" mentioned head coach Guy Gadowsky following the game. "If you watch him nothing bothers him and I think that is a tremendous quality in a goalie."

NOTES

  • Penn State continued its dominance on the penalty-kill going 9-for-9 on the night and they have now killed off 24 straight penalties to begin the season.
  • The Nittany Lions also went 1-for-7 on the power-play.
  • Notre Dame held the slim 33-32 advantage in shots. This marks the first game this season Penn State was outshot.
  • The third-ranked Fighting Irish are the highest ranked team Penn State has played in their first five seasons of NCAA Division I action.
  • Berger, Hamilton and Smirnov each extended their point streaks to four games as they have notched at least one-point in each game so far this season.
  • Smirnov notched his first career multi-point game while Richard registered his first of the season and 13th of his career.
