UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 19th ranked Penn State University Nittany Lions extended their unbeaten streak to five games as they defeated Canisius College, 4-2, in non-conference men's ice hockey action this evening from the Pegula Ice Arena.

Penn State moves to 5-1-1 on the year while the Golden Griffins fall to 2-5-1 overall after the opening month of college hockey action.

A huge turning point in the game came at 6:22 of the third period with Penn State clinging to a one-goal lead. Canisius appeared to have tied the game on a goal by Dylan McLaughlin, but Penn State would challenge the call and the Griffs were ruled offside.

"A real important play in the game was the challenge on their goal which turned out to be offside, and that was all David Goodwin," commented Gadowsky. "He made the call. He saw it. He made the call."

Subsequently that call became a two goal swing as just over two minutes later Penn State padded their lead and skated away with victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Griffs came out of the blocks skating fast and were rewarded with the opening goal as Jesse Pereira netted the first of his collegiate career at 3:47 for the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Lions potted the equalizer at 10:39 as sophomore Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) used some nifty stick work to free himself in the slot and was able to beat Canisius net-minder Charles Williams high-glove with a quick wrist-shot for the 1-1 score.
  • Penn State then grabbed the lead with their third short-handed tally of the year as freshman goaltender Peyton Jones rimmed the puck hard off the glass and it bounced to the neutral zone where sophomore Andrew Sturtz collected it on a break-away and made Williams look silly on a beautiful forehand-backhand-forehand to finish high glove at 14:18 for the 2-1 score.
  • The Nittany Lions stretched their lead to a pair of goals after sophomore Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) used a fancy move in front of the crease to slide the puck past the right pad of Williams at 7:12 of the second period for the 3-1 lead. The goal was reviewed, but the call on the ice stood as a good goal. Senior's Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alb.) and David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) were awarded the assists on the play.
  • Canisius then took a page out of Penn State's book and scored a short-handed goal of their own at 9:48 of the middle frame as Pereira collected the puck off an errant pass and skated in untested on Jones finding the back of the net for the 3-2 score.
  • The Griffs appeared to net the equalizer at 6:22 of the third period as Dylan McLaughlin beat Jones five-hole for the score, however, the goal was reviewed and Canisius was deemed offside so the goal was disallowed keeping PSU ahead by one.
  • Sophomore Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) found the net just two and a half minutes later giving Penn State the insurance they needed and the 4-2 lead at 8:47 of the third period.

GOALTENDING

Jones stopped 19 shots to remain unbeaten over the first month of play as he improves to 5-0-1 while Williams absorbed the loss falling to 2-3-1 after making 43 saves.

NOTES

  • Smirnov and Hamilton each extended their career-best seven-game point streaks as they have tallied at least one point in each contest through the opening month of play.
  • Goodwin collects his second straight multi-point game with his two helpers giving him 22 for his career. The senior now stands at 97 career points.
  • Peyton Jones opens his career unbeaten over the first month going 5-0-1.
  • Penn State went 1-for-7 with the man-advantage while killing off the only penalty they took in the game.
