Davis Among the Groza Stars of the Week

Oct. 3, 2016

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Penn State junior kicker Tyler Davis (St. Charles, Ill.) has been selected as one of the three Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award "Stars of the Week," as selected by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission.

Davis continued his perfect kicking career by making a trio of field goals and a pair of extra points. Davis made field goals of 19 and 27 yards before connecting from 40 yards out with two second remaining to force overtime. Davis set a career best with 11 points scored and tied a career high with three field goal attempts.

With his three field goals, Davis moved his consecutive field goals streak to 17, breaking the school record for consecutive field goals made. The mark was previously held by Sam Ficken, who made 15 straight field goals between the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Davis' 17 consecutive field goals made are tied for fourth in Big Ten history with Northwestern's Jeff Budzien (2013).

The native of St. Charles, Illinois is perfect on his Penn State career. He has made all 17 of his field goal attempts and all 25 of his extra point opportunities to mark the best start in program history.

The Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award is named for National Football League Hall of Fame kicker Lou "The Toe" Groza, who played 21 seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Groza won four NFL championships with Cleveland and was named NFL Player of the Year in 1954. Although an All-Pro offensive lineman as well, Groza ushered in the notion that there should be a place on an NFL roster for a kicker.
