THIS WEEK'S MATCHUP
Penn State opens the season with a solid test as they battle #16 Saint Lawrence in a pair of 7 p.m. games on October 6-7.

  • This marks the second-straight season Penn State has entertained the Saints for a pair of games. Last season the teams tied 2-2 in the opener with St. Lawrence taking the shootout victory 1-0. The following night the Saints escaped with a 4-2 win to claim the series.
  • Those two contests in Hockey Valley marked the first-time ever that the two programs squared off.

SCOUTING ST. LAWRENCE
St. Lawrence enters the week ranked #16 in the uscho.com poll after finishing last season #18.

  • Saint Lawrence was picked to finish second in the ECAC Preseason Coaches' Poll while senior defenseman Gavin Bayreuther and junior net-minder Kyle Hayton earned preseason All-ECAC laurels.
  • Bayreuther was also named a first-team All-ECAC selection and a second-team American Hockey Coaches Association All-American at the conclusion of his 2015-16 campaign. Classmate Eric Sweetman was named to the second-team All-ECAC last season.
  • Senior forward Alexander Dahl will don the 'C' for the Saint this season while Bayreuther, Sweetman and Ben Masella will serve as alternates.
  • Friday's contest marks the first in the tenure of newly appointed Head Coach Mark Morris. Morris was named the 14th Head Coach in program history on May 3, 2016. Morris coached last season for the Charlotte Checkers of the American Hockey League.
  • The Saints went 19-14-4 last season advancing to the ECAC Semifinals after sweeping Clarkson in a best-of-three series, but they were bounced by Harvard in overtime, 2-1
  • St. Lawrence returns three of their top five scorers off last season's team including their top two scorers in Bayreuther and Drew Smolcynski. Bayreuther paced the squad with 29 points and a team leading 12 goals while Smolcynski was hot on his heels with 28 points and a team best 19 assists.
  • Bayreuther became the first defenseman in program history to lead the team in scoring last season with his 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points.
  • The Saints also return starting net-minder Kyle Hayton. Hayton started all, but four games a season ago compiling a 17-12-3 record with a 2.03 goals against average and a .935 save percentage. Hayton also secured both shutouts last season for St. Lawrence.
  • Saint Lawrence brings a veteran team to the table this weekend with 15 upperclassmen (7 seniors, 8 juniors) out of their 27 players on the 2016-17 roster. They return 20 letter winners total from the 2015-16 roster.

WHAT WE CAN LEARN FROM QUEEN'S EXHIBITION
Penn State defeated Queen's (Ontario) 8-0 on Sunday afternoon in the International Game.

  • We still like to shoot the puck - Penn State continues to get off an astronomical amount of shots firing 89 at the target on Sunday while placing 50 of those on net. 39 of those shots on goal came over the final 40 minutes of action.
  • The next great goalie? - Freshman Peyton Jones looked extremely composed in net after getting the start including a terrific glove save during a short-handed break-away bid from the Gaels.
  • We have depth - 11 players recorded at least one point while eight Nittany Lions recorded multiple-points including six different goal scorers. Safe to say offense won't be an issue this season even if a top scorer goes cold.
  • The freshman class is worth the hype - three freshman tallied scores including a pair of goals from forward Denis Smirnov. Two other rookies added assists. Penn State dressed eight of their 10 freshman during the exhibition (six in starting lineup, 2 extra skaters).

NEXT UP
Penn State hits the road for the first time next Friday as they travel to Erie, Pa. to battle Mercyhurst in the Snowtown Throwdown at the Erie Insurance Arena at 7:00 p.m.
