UNIVERSITY PARK, PA - Paced by All Mid-Atlantic Region runners Tessa Barrett, Elizabeth Chikotas, Jillian Hunsberger, Kathryn Munks and Greta Lindsley the Penn State women's cross country team captured the Mid-Atlantic title for the second year in-a-row at the NCAA Mid Atlantic Regional meet.
The women combined for a score of 36 on Friday morning at the Blue and White golf course.
The Penn State men's team finished fifth with a total score of 190. Timothy McGowan was the lone male Nittany Lion to receive All Mid-Atlantic Region honors as Colin Abert finished 27th - missing All-Region by two spots.
Penn State entered the meet as the defending champions on the women's side.
"The women came in a little banged up after the conference meet," said head coach John Gondak. "We had a few of our top runners shaking off a few injuries so I was really thrilled and proud the way they competed today, coming in and winning the meet to advance off to nationals."
The Nittany Lions battled throughout the 6-kilometer course among three other ranked teams: No. 21 Villanova, No. 24 Penn, and No. 27 West Virginia.
Tessa Barrett was the top finisher on the day crossing the line in 20 minutes flat. Following Barrett was Elizabeth Chikotas (20:17) in third-place, Jillian Hunsberger (20:23) in fourth-place, Kathryn Munks (21:57) in 12th-place, and Greta Lindsley (21:06) in 16th-place. Barrett, Chikotas, Hunsberger, Munks and Lindsley combined to bring home five All Mid-Atlantic Region honors,
Round out the scoring for the Nittany Victoria Crawford (22:03) in 60th-place followed by , Julie Kocjancic (22:19) in 80th-place
On the men's side, Penn State traversed through the 10-kilometer course to claim a fifth-place finish with a score of 190 on the day.
"The guys were really down on themselves after the Big Ten meet." Said Gondak "I kept telling them that they're a good team and they just have to believe it."
"To go out and finish higher than we were ranked and be a top-five team at your region meet is a phenomenal run for that group and they're very young, they're very hungry and I think next year they're going to surprise a lot of people."
Tim McGowan (31:13) paced the way for the Nittany Lions with his All Mid-Atlantic Region 16th-place finish.
Rounding out scoring for Penn State were Colin Abert (31:24) in 27-place, Jon McGowan (31:29) in 32nd-place, Brandon Tubby (31:47) in 49th-place, and Billy McDevitt (32:08) in 67th-place.
