INDIANAPOLIS -- Penn State swimmers Shane Ryan (Havertown, Pa.) and Casey Francis (East Meadow, N.Y.) both swam season-best times, as they swam for the Big Ten Conference in the USA College Challenge, presented by arena, Saturday evening in the Indiana University Natatorium.

After 16 of 32 events, the USA Swimming National Team leads the Big Ten 161-101.

Ryan led off the Big Ten's men's 400 medley relay effort with a 100 backstroke of 46.33, improving on his season-best effort in the event the leads the conference and ranks third in the NCAA. The team finished third behind USA National team efforts in 3:07.93.

Francis placed sixth in the 500 free, placing sixth in a season-best 4:44.01 and also swam on an 800 free relay team.

The meet will continue Sunday at 11:30 a.m. with live coverage on BTN starting at noon.

Competition Format
The competition will total 16 men's and 16 women's events, which will include 13 individual races and three relays for each gender. A running score will be kept combining the points earned by both women and men. The winning team will be the team with the most combined team points at the end of the competition. As there are 596 points available in the 32 total events, the first team to 298.5 points will be the winner.

Scoring in the individual events will be: 1st Place (9 points), 2nd Place (4 points), 3rd Place (3 points), 4th Place (2 points) and 5th Place (1 point). Note: only three athletes can score for one team. Scoring for ties will be determined by adding the points for the two places together and dividing by two. A tie for 3rd place would be 2.5 points per team. Scoring in the relay events will be: 1st Place (11 points), 2nd Place (4 points) and 3rd place (2 points). A team can only score two of its relays.
