WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 2016 women's soccer season came to a close for the Penn State Nittany Lions following a 3-0 loss to No. 15 Virginia in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Friday afternoon at Shaw Field.

"Obviously, I am disappointed in the result today," head coach Erica Dambach said. "But overall, I am proud of this team and I am proud of what they were able to accomplish this season. I want to thank our seniors, Nickolette Driesse and Angela Widlacki. They both provided great leadership in different ways. Nickolette on the field was our blue collar, vocal leader and she left the program better than she found it. I think she has left a great legacy for this program. In regards to today, I think the team played a good second half, but it wasn't enough. We finished off that game wanting more, which is exactly what you want heading into the off-season."

The Cavaliers (15-4-2) struck early in the game as Meghan Cox scored on a header off a free kick just 54 seconds into the match. UVa then added to its lead on a goal from Betsy Brandon during the 23rd minute of play. With 15:44 left in regulation, Taylor Ziemer made it 3-0 in favor of Virginia.

In net for the Nittany Lions (12-5-4), freshman Amanda Dennis (San Diego, Calif.) recorded six saves on the afternoon.
