Ryan Leads Again at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio ââ'¬" Penn State men's swimming senior Shane Ryan continued to lead the Nittany Lions on the second day of the Ohio State Fall Invitational, winning the 100 backstroke and leading two relays to top-five finishes Saturday in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

After two days, the Penn State men are fourth with 371 points, while on the women's side the Lions rank eighth with 156 points.

Ryan won the 100 back in 46.48 after a preliminary swim of 46.23. He also led the 800 free relay to a second-place finish in 6:28.11 and the 200 medley relay team to a fifth place finish in 1:28.43.

Hector Garcia Boissier led the Lions on the boards, posting a finals score of 382.35 to place third.

Ryan was not the only Nittany Lion in the A-final of the 100 backstroke, as Liam Veregin was eighth in 48.75. Two Lions also reached the 'B' final as Tomer Zamir was 12th in 48.52 and Austin Wilson was 20th in 50.42.

Penn State placed three in the 'A' final of the 100 breaststroke, led by freshman Kaelan Freund in a B-cut 54.75 seconds. Andrew Schuehler followed in sixth in 55.56, Gunther Cassell was eighth in 56.07, and Michael Kwasnik won the 'B' final in 55.92 to place 11th.

The 200 freestyle was also one of the men's top events, as Matt Stasiunas led in an NCAA B-cut 1:37.78 to place fifth. JP Cervone won the 'B' final in a B-cut 1:37.77, and Ryan O'Neill and Bob Bantley followed in 14th (1:38.97) and 19th (1:41.06), respectively.

The Nittany Lion women placed two in the 400 IM 'A' final, led by Ally McHugh who swam a personal best placing sixth in 4:11.96, while Casey Francis was 10th in 4:11.96.

Katie Saloky continued her strong season in the 100 butterfly, posting a personal-best and B-cut time of 54.16 seconds in the preliminaries and placing 10th in the 'A' final in 54.62.

Tommie Dillione also swam a B-cut time, winning the 200 freestyle 'B' final in a personal-best 1:47.65. Siena Salvaggio followed in 13th in 1:48.88.

Other successful events on the men's side included the 100 butterfly, where Andy Schuehler placed 14th in 49.40 and Tomer Zamir was 16th in 49.54.

Competition for the third and final day of the meet will resume Sunday.
