Nittany Lions Compete In Day One At Split Tournaments

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; November 4, 2016ââ'¬" The Penn State women's tennis team kicked off their final tournaments of the fall season, splitting action in New Hampshire and North Carolina.

The singles results from the first day at the Big Green Invitational are as follows: Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Florida) lost to Nicole Robinson 7-5, 6-1. Bennett Dunn (Orlando, Fla.) fell to Andjela Djolwvic 6-3, 6-1. Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Florida) lost to Marta Ruedas 6-0, 6-3. Liyin Xu (Chengdu, China). Fell to Deborah Suarez 6-1, 6-3.

"We played some tough tennis against a good team today, said assistant coach Mike Fenwick. We will make some adjustments and be prepared to compete again tomorrow."

In doubles Zuhse/Dunn lost to Djokovic/Robinson 6-2 and Shukow/Xu fell to Ruedas/Suarez 6-4.

The four Nittany Lions at the Kitty Harrison Invitational competed against Maryland in singles. Tour defeated Blik 6-4, 7-5; Sullivan beat McCluskey 6-4, 6-1; Samantha Smith (Carey, N.C.) defeated Thebault 6-2, 6-2; and Yemelyanenka defeated Hanley 6-4,6-1.

Head Coach Chris Cagle commented on the four players performance competing in North Carolina. "We had some spots of play at UNC to build on for tomorrow. It was very good to see Katia and Devan fight back in doubles. Our singles play in the afternoon had some areas of really good tennis and it was good to see Sammi take care of business. We look forward to tomorrow's play at Duke."

In doubles Chang/Stepanova of William and Mary defeated Blik/McCluskey 8-7(9). Smith/Hanley defeated Thaler/Madson of William and Mary 8-5. Blik/McCluskey beat Baker and Ouellet-Pizer of UNC 8-7(9). Smith/Hanley were defeated by Vasquez and Kane of UNC 8-3.

Competition on the court at the Kitty Harrison Invitational continues tomorrow November 5 when the players compete in doubles against UVA at 9am. Singles will continue against Duke at 10:30am.
