ERIE, Pa. - For the first time in program history, the Penn State women's hockey team left the Mercyhurst Ice Center victorious, as the Nittany Lions topped the Mercyhurst Lakers, 3-2, in overtime Saturday afternoon. Senior Amy Petersen's (Minnetonka, Minn.) second goal of the afternoon 31 seconds into the extra frame clinched the victory for the Blue and White.

For the Penn State (4-6-2, 3-1-0 CHA) offense, Petersen netted a pair of goals and Kelsey Crow (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored once, while four other Nittany Lions each tallied one assist. In net for the Nittany Lions, freshman goaltender Daniela Paniccia (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) recorded a 33-save performance to record her fourth career victory.

The Nittany Lions built a 2-0 lead on goals from Petersen and Crow heading into the third period. Petersen put the Nittany Lions up 1-0 on her eighth goal of the season with 1:36 left in the opening frame and then Crow picked up her third goal of the year on the power play at 15:58 in the second period.

The Lakers (2-7-1, 1-3-0 CHA) then netted a pair of extra attacker goals during the third period to send the game into overtime tied at two. For Mercyhurst, Maggie Knott recorded her first goal of the season with 6:50 remaining in regulation and then with the Lakers playing 6-on-4, Taylor Accursi tallied her third goal of the season with 1:21 left in regulation.

With the game tied at two in overtime, a hooking penalty from Sam Isbell sent the Nittany Lions to the power play at 20 seconds. After the Nittany Lions went to work on the power play, Petersen fired a shot past Mercyhurst goaltender Sarah McDonnell to secure the 3-2 Nittany Lion victory at 31 seconds. On Petersen's game-winner, freshman Brooke Madsen (Eagan, Minn.) tallied her team-leading 10th assist of the year.
