Meijer, Putsch Named NFHCA All-Americans

Dec. 7, 2016

NFHCA All-Americans

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.
- Penn State field hockey sophomores Aurelia Meijer (Hattem, Netherlands) and Moira Putsch (Media, Pa.) were named 2016 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I Second-Team All-Americans as announced Wednesday with 48 student-athletes earning first, second or third-team recognition.

This marks the sixth-time in the last seven seasons Penn State has had at least two players selected to All-America teams.

Sophomore Aurelia Meijer finished the 2016 season tied as the Nittany Lions third leading scorer netting 11 goals, 12 assist, totaling 34 points on the season. Meijer also tied for a team lead in game-winning goals recording four over the season.

Meijer, the first international field hockey in Penn State history, wrapped up her sophomore campaign in Happy Valley by earning her first career Second-Team All-American honor as well as her second-career All-Region honor and second career All-Big Ten honors following a stellar freshman season in the Blue & White.

Meijer, who has two career hat tricks, scored the first last season against Iowa as her dad was in the stands watching. The second hat trick - coincidentally - came this season in a game against Rutgers where Meijer's mom was in attendance as Penn State rallied from behind to down the Scarlet Knights 4-1.

Putsch started all 20 games for Penn State and finished the season as the leading scorer for the Nittany Lions pouring in a career high 15 goals, 20 assist for a team high 50 points from the Big Ten First-Team forward. Putsch finished the season as the NCAA leader in assist averaging 1.00 assist per game. The Media, Pa. native also recorded three game winning shots throughout the season, including the game winner against Michigan in the semifinal of the Big Ten Tournament.

Both Meijer and Putsch were integral parts of the Penn State squad that captured the seventh Big Ten Tournament Championship for Penn State field hockey - a conference record. The win over Maryland also had a historical significance as it was the 500th-career win for Hall of Fame head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss spanning 33 years of coaching dating back to 1984.

Meijer and Putsch become the 26th and 27th Penn State Second-Team All-Americans and the 100th and 101st All-Americans overall in program history beginning with the first ever Penn State field hockey All-American Charlene Morett back in 1977.

The All-America Team included 23 seniors or graduate students, 14 juniors, eight sophomores and three freshmen among the 48 honorees.
