WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Lady Lions could not get into a rhythm offensively on Saturday (Jan. 7) afternoon inside of Mackey Arena, as the Penn State women's basketball program dropped a 64-51 decision at Purdue.
The Boilermakers (11-6, 2-1 B1G) used a 13-0 run that spanned the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter to move their lead to 26-8 with 7:03 to play in the opening half. Penn State (11-5, 1-3 B1G) could not get the deficit into single digits the rest of the way in the conference setback.
Ten different Lady Lions cracked the scoring column, led by junior Lindsey Spann's (Laurel, Md.) 10 points. Redshirt freshman Amari Carter (Washington D.C.) added nine points, while senior Peyton Whitted (Suwanee, Ga.) contributed eight tallies. Of the 10 players on the scoresheet, five reached at least six points.
As good as Penn State has been this season from 3-point range, it was unable to get anything going from deep until the 4:25 mark of the fourth quarter. As a team, PSU missed its first 10 attempts before Spann's 126th career made 3-pointer found the bottom of the net. The Lady Lions ended the game 1-of-12 from distance and Purdue made 5-of17 shots from deep.
Overall from the field, Purdue hit 24-of-60 shots (40%) and Penn State connected on 21-of-55 (38%), with the Boilermakers connecting on 11-of-21 shots from the line, compared to 8-of-15 for the Lady Lions.

With 1:22 left in the first quarter
An Ae'Rianna Harris layup started a 6-0 run to close the first quarter and pushed Purdue's lead to double-figures. The Boilermakers scored the first seven points of the second quarter, as well, to move the home team's lead to 18 points with 7:03 to play in the first half.
Difference Makers
Penn State
- G Lindsey Spann -- Scored eight of her game-high 10 points in the fourth quarter for her ninth game this season in double-figures. She added one assist, one steal and one blocked shot.
- G Amari Carter -- Netted nine points, two assists and four rebounds in the game.
- C Ashanti Thomas -- Pulled down a team-high seven boards and added six points in the setback.
Purdue
- G Dominique Oden -- Scored a game-high 17 points -- including five 3-pointers -- and had seven rebounds.
- F Bridget Perry -- Ranked second on the team with 14 points.
- G Adreona Keys -- Posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

First Quarter
After a slow start offensively, Teniya Page (Chicago, Ill.) opened the scoring with a layup at 8:01, but Purdue responded with a layup and 3-pointer to take the 5-2 lead with 7:18 to play. The Boilermakers ran their lead to 9-4 on back-to-back layups heading into the first media timeout and continued to extend the margin, outscoring Penn State10-4 over the final four minutes to take an 11-point lead into the first break.

Second Quarter
The two teams continued the slow start to quarters in the second stanza, as neither team could convert in the first almost two minutes. Purdue hit a 3-pointer and followed that with a steal and score to move its lead to 24-8, before Penn State called a timeout with 7:53 to play. Ashanti Thomas got the offensive going with 6:20 left in the quarter, and layups by Page and Whitted followed to force Purdue to use a timeout leading 26-14. Penn State got the lead to 11 points, 31-20, but Purdue scored the final five points of the quarter.

Third Quarter
After the Lady Lions opened the scoring with a Thomas layup, the Boilermakers reeled off the next eight points to push their lead to 22 points, 44-22, with 6:10 to play in the third quarter. The lead grew to as much as 25 points, before a Carter jumper closed the half to send the game to the final quarter at 55-32 in favor of Purdue.

Fourth Quarter
Penn State trimmed the lead quickly to start the fourth quarter, going on a 13-4 run over the first six minutes. The two teams would trade scores the rest of the way, as the Lady Lions outscored Purdue by 10 points in the final quarter. Spann scored eight of her team-high 10 points in the final 10 minutes, while Carter and Kaliyah Mitchell each added four points.
