UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State advanced to its first ever semifinal match in the 9th annual Big Ten Match Play Championship after a 3.5-2.5 victory over the higher seeded Purdue.
"Our guys fought so hard out there this morning," said head coach Greg Nye. "It would have been easy to give in, but they kept after it to the end against an excellent Purdue team."
No. 4 seed Purdue got the first point of the day after Alec Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) fell 4&3, but junior Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) responded winning his match shortly after 3&2.
Penn State seized the next point and a half as sophomore Charles Huntzinger (Duluth, Ga.) held on to win 1UP and Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) halved his match. Sophomore Ryan Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) fell in a close match 2UP to even the contest at 2.5-2.5.
Sophomore JD Hughes (Carlisle, Pa.) found himself in an A/S match heading into the last hole. A win on 18 and the victory would be secured for the 5th seeded Lions. If the hole was halved, the first tiebreaker would have given the match to the Hawkeyes as they would have won more holes six to four on the day.
Hughes' approach shot came in flagstick high and he was able to make par with his opponent bogeying the hole to win the match.
The Lions will return to action Saturday morning at 7 a.m. to face the 8th seeded Iowa Hawkeyes after they defeated both Indiana and Michigan State to reach the semifinals.
