UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- A three-goal third period from the fifth-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers was the difference as No. 9 Penn State fell by the 6-3 score this evening in Big Ten Conference play from Pegula Ice Arena.
The Gophers have captured all three games so far this season against the Lions and improve to 19-8-2 on the year and 10-3-0 in the Big Ten while PSU falls to 18-7-2 overall and 7-5-1 in conference action.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Minnesota opened the scoring in the first period as Rem Pitlick skated in on a breakaway and beat freshman goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 1-0 edge at 6:20 of the first period.
- Penn State answered taking advantage of a 5-on-3 power play as sophomore Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) banged in a rebound off senior Dylan Richard's (Sherwood Park, Alb.) initial bid for the 1-1 score at 8:50 of the frame.
- Then the Nittany Lions looked to have taken the lead at 11:49 of the period, but Sturtz was called for goaltender interference, which negated a Vince Pedrie goal.
- Penn State gained the 2-1 lead in the second period as freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) set up classmate Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) and he beat Gopher net-minder Eric Schierhorn high glove at 5:49.
- Minnesota responded just over two minutes later as Tyler Sheehy again found Pitlick in the neutral zone and he skated free beating Jones on the glove side for the 2-2 score at 8:25 of the middle frame.
- Ryan Norman then gave the Gophers the lead back at 14:26 as he banged home a rebound for the 3-2 score.
- The Lions grabbed the equalizer in the third period as senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) set up freshman Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ontario) at the point and his wrist shot squeaked through traffic out front to light the lamp at 10:25 for the 3-3 tie.
- The Golden Gophers grabbed the lead back with a power-play goal by Justin Kloos on a one-timer from the left dot for the 4-3 score at 14:00 of the third period.
- Taylor Cammarata added a late goal off a turnover at 17:27 and then Pitlick finished out the hat trick by hitting the empty net at 18:34 for the final score.
GOALTENDING
Jones stopped 25 pucks in the defeat to fall to 16-5-2 while Schierhorn made 40 saves and improves to 19-8-2 with the victory.
NOTES
- Penn State held the 43-31 edge in shots while going 1-for-4 on the power-play. Minnesota was 1-for-3 with the man-advantage.
- Penn State falls to 1-5-0 when trailing after two periods this season.
- This evening Jones set a new Penn State single-season record for starts and appearances by a goaltender with 24 passing Matt Skoff's 23 appearances during the 2013-14 season.
- Smirnov extends his point streak to three games (3-5-8) after his 11th multi-point game this season. This is his sixth game this season with at least three points and third with three assists.
- Sucese now has a three-game point streak (3-3-6).
- Goodwin tied his career-best point-streak of seven games with his third period assist.
- Penn State is now 3-2-0 in nationally televised games this season.
