UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) potted a pair of goals, but it was not enough as a late surge from No. 5 Minnesota lifted the Golden Gophers past No. 9 Penn State, 4-3, in overtime this evening in Big Ten Conference action from Pegula Ice Arena.

The Nittany Lions fall to 18-8-2 on the year and 7-6-1 in the Big Ten while Minnesota improves to 20-8-2 overall and 11-3-0 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State opened the scoring as senior Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) generated an odd-man rush and freshman classmates Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) and Smirnov played a little tic-tac-toe with Smirnov finishing past the glove of Gopher net-minder Eric Scierhorn for the 1-0 lead at 3:17 of the first period.
  • Senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) increased the lead to 2-0 as he took advantage of a broken play in the offensive zone as he collected the puck in the right slot firing blocker side to beat Schierhorn at 2:43 of the second period.
  • Minnesota cut the deficit in half during an odd-man rush in the third period as Jake Bischoff found the back of the net for the 2-1 score at 5:08 of the final frame.
  • The Gophers then knotted the score at 2-2 as Tyler Sheehy found the back of the net at 17:49 of the final period, however, just 45 seconds later Ryan Lindgren was called for a hook on Smirnov and the freshman was awarded a penalty shot.
  • Smirnov went forehand-backhand-forehand to open up Schierhorn and slide the puck five-hole for the 3-2 score at 18:34.
  • Minnesota then opted for the empty net and after a Penn State icing call with seven seconds left the Gophers won the draw and Justin Kloos fired glove side to light the lamp and send the game into overtime.
  • In overtime it was all Minnesota as they drew an early penalty and even though Penn State killed it off Rem Pitlick fired from the point through traffic and off a few bodies in front for the 4-3 winner at 3:27 of the extra session.

GOALTENDING

Freshman Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) stopped 25 shots, but fell to 16-6-2 with the loss while Schierhorn improves to 20-8-2 after a 42 save performance.

NOTES

  • Penn State held the 45-29 edge in shots while neither team registered a power-play tally in six tries. The Nittany Lions went 0-for-4 and Minnesota was 0-for-2.
  • Goodwin now has a new career-best eight-game point streak (five goals, five assists) after his second period goal.
  • Sucese (3-4-7) and Smirnov (5-5-9) both extend their point streaks to four games. Smirnov now has 12 multi-point games on the season including three-in-a-row and his 39 points are just one shy of Casey Bailey's single-season program record of 40, which he had during the 2014-15 season.
  • Smirnov also becomes the first Penn State player to record a penalty shot goal since Tommy Olczyk against UConn on October 10, 2014.
  • Penn State drops just their second game all season when leading after two periods of play falling to 16-2-2 in such games.
