UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Tony Carr earned Big Ten honors after a standout freshman regular season, the league announced Monday during BTN Live. In a poll of league coaches, Carr was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team, while being pegged as honorable mention All-Big Ten by the conference media.
Carr is Penn State's first player on the rookie team since 2006 and just the fourth overall, joining Marlon Smith (2004), Geary Claxton (2005) and Jamelle Cornley (2006). He is the first Nittany Lion freshman to earn a spot on an All-Big Ten team (first, second, third or honorable mention) and is one of three freshmen this season to end up on an all-league team, joining Michigan State's Miles Bridges (second team) and Nick Ward (honorable mention).
The Philly product is averaging 13.2 points per game on the season, a figure which increased to 14.6 ppg in Big Ten play. He broke the PSU freshman record for assists and now has 130 total and an average of 4.2 per game. Over the last 10 games, Carr is averaging 16.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists, leading the team in scoring four times during that stretch.
The 6-foot-3 guard has two double-doubles on the year. He produced his first vs. Morgan State (12/21) with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nearly earned a triple-double with eight assists. His second featured 23 points and 14 assists, marking the first PSU double-double with assists since Tim Frazier against Duquesne in the 2013-14 season. Carr's 14 assists vs. the Hoosiers are tied for the second-most all-time in a game and the most since 1975.
Carr and the 13th-seeded Nittany Lions (14-17, 6-12) begin play in the Big Ten Tournament at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday against No. 12 seed Nebraska (12-18, 6-12) on ESPN2. The winner will advance to play fifth-seeded Michigan State at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the second round.
