DETROIT, Mich. - No. 15 Penn State will travel to the Motor City and begin the Big Ten Tournament with a quarterfinal match against Michigan on Thursday evening at 8 p.m. The Wolverines recently swept the Nittany Lions just last weekend and the teams will meet for the third time in just seven days come puck drop Thursday.

THIS WEEK'S MATCHUP
- Penn State travels to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit as the No. 4 seed in the fourth annual Big Ten Championship Tournament.
- The Nittany Lions will face a familiar foe as they battle No. 5 Michigan at 8 p.m. on Thursday evening in game 2 of the tournament.
- The winner advances to face top-seeded Minnesota in the second semifinal on Friday evening at 8 p.m.
- Michigan leads the all-time series 10-8-0 while the teams have split their previous two meetings in the Big Ten Tournament as Penn State won the first meeting three years ago, 2-1, in double overtime and Michigan secured a, 7-2, semifinal victory last year.
LAST TIME THEY MET
- The two teams split the regular season series as both teams held home ice and swept the opposition in their home barn.
- Penn State outscored Michigan 11-2 in their December series and the Wolverines returned the favor this past weekend outscoring the Lions 7-2 including handing them just their second shutout of the season a 4-0 decision on Saturday evening.
TOURNAMENT HISTORY
- Penn State is 2-3 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament advancing to the semifinal round on a pair of occasions. The Nittany Lions are 1-1 against both Michigan and Wisconsin and 0-1 against Ohio State. PSU has yet to face Michigan State or Minnesota in postseason play.
- Only five current Nittany Lions have registered a post-season point with David Goodwin leading the way with five assists. Kevin Kerr is second with one goal and two assists for three points while Ricky DeRosa and Zach Saar have each registered a lone goal and Dylan Richard has added one assist.
THE FIRST 40 MINUTES
- Last Friday, Penn State was defeated for just the third time all season when holding a lead entering the third period. The Nittany Lions led 2-1 entering the final 20 minutes, but Michigan struck for two goals to secure the victory.
- Penn State is 18-3-2 when leading after two period this season and on the other end of the spectrum the Lions are just 1-7-0 when trailing after the opening 40 minutes of play.
OFFENSIVE STRUGGLE
- The Nittany Lions usually don't lack in scoring goals, but Michigan held Penn State to just two goals last weekend marking their lowest weekend total all season. Their two goals matches their season total at Yost for last season as well when PSU was held to just two single goals in a pair of losses.
- With their lack of offense, Penn State relinquished the top spot in the nation for scoring average as they fell to 4.03 goals per game and now sit behind the 4.23 of Harvard.
- The Nittany Lions are also now 0-5-0 on the year when scoring two goals or less, but also hold a 17-0-0 record when allowing two goals or less. Penn State is also a perfect 13-0-0 when scoring five or more goals this season.
POSTSEASON AWARDS
- Sophomore Vince Pedrie became just the second Nittany Lion and first defenseman to earn First-Team All-Big Ten honors after leading all Big Ten blue-liners in goals with seven while adding 19 assists for 26 points, good for second in the conference. In 20 Big Ten games the sophomore record two goals and 14 assist for 16 points also ranking second.
- Senior David Goodwin earned honorable mention accolades for the third straight season and was joined by Smirnov and freshman Peyton Jones while Jones and Smirnov were also recognized on the All-Freshman team with defenseman Kris Myllari. To read more CLICK HERE!
RECAPPING MICHIGAN
- Penn State was shut out for just the second time all season on Saturday night in a 4-0 setback. The Lions were also held to their lowest goal total for a single weekend all year with just two goals scored over the two games.
- With a pair of defenseman scoring the only goals last weekend for Penn State it marked the first-time in program history that a forward did not record a goal during a two-game series.
- Penn State held Michigan to just 40 total shots, which was six less than their own team total of 46 on Saturday night alone.
- Penn State went 0-for-9 with the man-advanage after having scored at least one power play goal in four straight games entering the weekend. Their PK went 7-for-8 and have now killed off 18 of their last 19 power plays against.
