WGOLF Prepares for the Briar's Creek Invitational

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Penn State women's golf team is in Charleston, S.C. preparing for the fifth annual Briar's Creek Invitational hosted by the College of Charleston.

The two-day tournament will get underway tomorrow with both rounds one and two. The day will begin with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. and will have a continuous play style through the 36 holes, with the final round on Tuesday.

This year's field is a tough one, having 10 top-50 ranked teams competing, with the two-time defending champions at this event, the Florida Gators ranking as the highest team at sixth. Penn State will be joined by Illinois, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Wisconsin as the five Big Ten teams competing. As the rest of the field rounds out to be; Auburn, Boston College, Campbell, College of Charleston (host), Charleston Southern, East Carolina, Florida, Kansas, Long Beach State, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, and Texas Tech.

Head coach Denise St. Pierre is sticking with the same starting five that brought home the title in the last tournament, the River Landing Classic. Those five players are sophomores Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.), Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.), and Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.), as well as the senior Kate Granahan (Allentown, Pa.) and the newcomer Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.).

This is the Nittany Lions third tournament of the spring season. At last year's Briar's Creek Invitational the team finished in 13th place with a score of 890.
