BALTIMORE - Sophomore Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) registered a career-high six goals to lead No. 10 Penn State past Johns Hopkins, 16-10, in Big Ten women's lacrosse action this evening from Homewood Field.

The Nittany Lions improve to 10-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play while the Blue Jays fall to 8-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten.

Senior Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) added five goals and one assist for six points and classmate Aby Smucker (Bel Air, Md.) registered her first hat-trick of the season

Penn State opened the scoring as Carter scored just 32 seconds into the contest and Lazo found the back of the net at 26:01 for the 2-0 edge.

Johns Hopkins fought back to tie the contest as Shannon Fitzgerald and Miranda Ibello scored just 16 seconds apart for the 2-2 score at the 19:56 mark.

The Jays then sandwiched a goal between one more each from Carter and Lazo for the 4-3 Nittany Lion lead at the 15:49 mark of the opening half. Johns Hopkins then went into the locker room scoring five straight goals by five different players to secure the 8-4 lead at the intermission.

Senior Abby Smucker (Bel Air, Md.) opened the scoring in the second half and junior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) followed with her first of the game cutting the deficit to 8-6 at the 25:29 mark.

Hopkins responded, but Penn State then went on a 10-1 scoring run including scoring the final eight goals to grab the 16-10 victory. Smucker had a pair of goals during the final run while Carter and Lazo potted three each for the final score.

Penn State held the advantage in shots (40-29), ground balls (22-16) and draw controls (17-11).

Senior Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) stopped eight shots to improve to 9-1 on the season with the victory.

Penn State heads to Drexel for a midweek tilt on Wednesday at 4 p.m. before returning home on Saturday to host Ohio State at 1 p.m.
