UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State women's hockey team announced its yearend awards at its annual team banquet Saturday. The team awards were voted on by members of the Penn State women's hockey team.
Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.), Kelsey Crow (Minnetonka, Minn.), Brooke Madsen (Eagan, Minn.), Sarah Nielsen (Edina, Minn.) and Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) were honored with team plaudits at the team banquet Saturday.
Bowman, a senior forward, was named Team MVP and brought home the Top Two-Way Player Award. Penn State's first All-CHA First Team honoree set single-season program records in points (32) and goals (18) in 33 games played during the 2016-17 season. Bowman's senior year also included two hat tricks (Oct. 7 & Dec. 4), 14 assists, and CHA Player of the Month honors for Sept./Oct. On Jan. 28, the captain recorded a pair of assists to become the first Nittany Lion to tally 100 career points.
Crow, an alternate captain, received the Top Defenseman Award. On the year, Crow played in 26 games and blocked 31 shot attempts. Offensively, the sophomore defenseman recorded eight points on three goals and five assists, which included a pair of power play goals. On Oct. 28, Crow posted a three-point outing on one goal and two assists in a 5-0 win at RIT.
Madsen, Penn State's Rookie of the Year, played in all 35 games during the 2016-17 season. On the year, the All-CHA Rookie Team member recorded 21 points on seven goals and 14 assists. In the all-time Penn State record books, Madsen's 21 points and 14 assists rank second among Nittany Lion rookies.
Nielsen, a senior forward, received the team's Leadership and Humanitarian Award. On the ice, Nielsen recorded seven points on two goals and five assists in 35 games played. Off the ice, Nielsen was one of 15 student-athletes, and one of five female student-athletes, nominated for the Hockey Humanitarian Award.
This past summer, Nielsen spent time at a Young Life camp in her home state of Minnesota. Nielsen, a nutrition major, is a two-time All-Big Ten Academic Team honoree and a three-time All-CHA Academic Team member.
Petersen, an alternate captain, garnered the team's Top Forward Award. The All-CHA Second Team honoree, tallied a career-best 30 points on a career-best 16 goals and 14 assists during the 2016-17 slate.
In 2016-17, Petersen recorded eight games with at least two points, a natural hat trick an 8-1 victory at Union on Oct. 7, scored a pair of goals, which included the game-winner, in a 3-2 overtime victory at Mercyhurst on Nov. 5, and she became the second Nittany Lion to record 100 career points with an assist in a 3-2 win at No. 8 Robert Morris on Feb. 17.
