UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The eleventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions dropped a tough, 7-4, decision this evening to No. 16 Wisconsin in Big Ten men's ice hockey action from Pegula Ice Arena.
PSU falls to 20-9-2 on the year and 9-7-1 in the conference while the Badgers improve to 19-11-1 overall and 12-5-0 in the Big Ten.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wisconsin opened the scoring after causing a defensive miscue deep in the Penn State end it was Will Johnson finding the back of the net on a feed from Ryan Wagner on an odd man rush at 9:10 for the 1-0 score.
- The Lions responded as sophomore Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) banged home a rebound with the man-advantage off classmate Vince Pedrie's (Rochester, Minn.) initial bid from the right point at 12:02 of the opening period for the 1-1 tie.
- The Badgers tilted the score back in their favor as Seamus Malone was able to light the lamp on a shot that was initially saved and just trickled over the goal line for the 2-1 lead at 4:58 of the second period.
- Wisconsin extended the lead as Jason Ford tipped home a rebound at 13:18 of the middle frame for the 2-1 lead.
- Penn State fought back to cut the deficit in half as freshman Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) ripped a bomb from the left dot off a pair of great passes from senior Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) and junior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) for the 3-2 score at 17:40 of the second.
- Sturtz was then able to pick the right corner of the net for the equalizer at 18:38 of the second period, but a bad neutral zone turnover sent the Badgers on an odd-man rush and Matt Ustaski fired a wrist shot past the glove of freshman goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) for the 4-3 lead at 19:48.
- Grant Besse extended the Wisconsin lead at 4:02 of the third period as he punched home a rebound just 1:10 before senior Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alb.) found the back of the net for the Nittany Lions for the 5-4 score.
- Wisconsin then grabbed the 6-4 lead as Ryan Wagner took advantage of a defenseman with a broken stick to dangle and fire high-glove at 14:54 of the third period. Wagner then added a late empty net goal for the final score.
GOALTENDING
Badger freshman Jack Berry stopped 34 pucks to improve to 10-5-1 on the season while Jones falls to 18-7-2 after making 25 saves.
NOTES
- Penn State held the 38-32 shot advantage for the game while going 1-for-3 with the man-advantage. Wisconsin was 0-for-1 on the power-play. The Nittany Lions have now killed off ten straight penalties over the last four games.
- Sturtz becomes just the second 20-goal scorer in Penn State history and is just one shy of tying Casey Bailey's single season record of 22, which he registered during the 2014-15 season.
- Sucese extended his career long point streak to seven games with his second period goal. Pedrie lengthens his streak to four games while Berger and Sturtz now have three-game point streaks.
- Junior Erik Autio (Espoo, Finland) played in his 100th career game this evening becoming the 12th Penn State skater to reach that milestone.
- Senior David Goodwin (St. Louis, Mo.) sees his career-best 10-game point streak snapped as he is held off the scoresheet.
- Penn State has lost four straight home games for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
- Penn State has only committed two major penalties this season and are 2-for-2 in killing them off. They did not allow a shot on goal by the Badgers during that five-minute span this evening.
NEXT UP
Both teams are right back here tomorrow night as they close out the season series with an 8 p.m. puck drop available nationally on American Sports Network and locally on WJAC-TV. Approximately 30 minutes prior to faceoff there will be a brief Senior Ceremony on the ice to honor the 2017 senior class.
