DAVIS, Calif. ââ'¬" Extra base hits powered UC Davis to a 10-2 win over Penn State in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon in Dobbins Stadium.
UC Davis (4-7) shortstop Jacob Thomas hit a three-run home run in the fourth and right fielder Ryan Hooper hit a solo shot in the seventh, while second baseman Cameron Briggs, left fielder Ryan Anderson, and designated hitter Guillermo Salazar (2) all had RBI doubles. Thomas was the Aggies' leading hitter, going 3-for-4 with a walk and three runs.
Left fielder Braxton Giavedoni (Punxsutawney, Pa.) led Penn State (4-7) offensively going 2-for-4 with an RBI-double, while second baseman Conlin Hughes (Holly Springs, N.C.) extended his hitting streak to 10 with a single.
Three UC Davis pitchers combined to hold the Nittany Lions without a walk, led by RHP Blake Hannah (1-0) who went four innings and yielded just one run on four hits with two strikeouts.
Briggs' double in the second inning drove in the first run of the game, and he later scored from third on a groundout by Hooper. In the third, Anderson doubled with one out to score a run. He got caught stealing, but a pair of walks put runners on base again and Salazar delivered with a two-run double with two outs for a 5-0 lead.
Penn State got on the board in the top of the fourth after Hughes led off with a single, stole second, and with one out, scored on a double to the left corner by Giavedoni.
Thomas' three-run shot in the bottom half of the frame gave the Aggies a comfortable 8-1 margin though. The Lions would score again in the fifth on an RBI-groundout by centerfielder Mason Nadeau (Lansdale, Pa.), but it would be as close as they would come.
UC Davis added a run each in the sixth and seventh for the final margin.
LHP Taylor Lehman (0-3) suffered the loss, yielding two runs on two hits and a walk with one strikeout in two innings of work.
Penn State will conclude its spring break trip with a three-game series against Sacramento State starting continues Thursday at 6 p.m. ET.
