UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" A late rally was not enough, as Binghamton defeated Penn State, 6-3, in non-conference baseball action Monday evening in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Binghamton was led by shortstop Paul Rufo, who went 3-for-5 with a triple, double and five RBIs, and RHP Jake Miller (2-0), who yielded just one hit and one walk while striking out four over five innings. He held Penn State (11-20) hitless until designated hitter Brett Davis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) singled to center in the fifth.
The Nittany Lions trailed 5-0 entering the seventh, but cut into the deficit with three runs. With first baseman Ryan Sloniger (Punxsutawney, Pa.) on first and right fielder Jordan Bowersox (Winter Springs, Fla.) on second after base hits and one out, Helsel rocketed a single past the third baseman to score Bowersox and advance Sloniger to third. After a strikeout, catcher Alex Malinsky (Apex, N.C.) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and then third baseman Logan Goodnight (Wheeling, W.Va.) was plunked, bringing home Sloniger. Centerfielder Austin Riggins (Greer, S.C.) then drew a walk to score Helsel before a groundout ended the inning.
Binghamton built its lead in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Rufo hit a bases clearing triple in the third for a 2-0 lead, and it went to 3-0 in the fourth on a solo home run by designated hitter Jason Agresti. The Bearcats added two more runs in the fifth on a two-RBI single by Rufo.
Rufo added an RBI-double in the ninth for the final margin. RHP Dylan Stock (2) earned his second save of the season with a perfect ninth.
RHP Schuyler Bates (Ossining, N.Y.) (1-2) went six innings for Penn State, yielding five runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts. RHP Eric Mock (Shillington, Pa.)finished the game, striking out three and allowing a run on three hits and a walk.
Penn State will conclude its homestand Tuesday against Bucknell starting at 6:30 p.m. Fans can purchase two tickets for the price of one.
