UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Penn State softball team earned its second win over a top-25 program in the 2017 season when it defeated No. 25 Ohio State 2-1 in game one of a Big Ten Conference doubleheader Wednesday, April 12 at Nittany Lion Softball Park and Beard Field. The Nittany Lions (16-22, 4-7 B1G) were unable to secure the series sweep falling to the Buckeyes (24-10, 8-3 B1G), 10-7, in the tail end of the doubleheader.
Freshman Destiny Weber (Grafton, Ohio) brought in Penn State's two runs in game one when she roped a double off the left field wall, while freshman Delaney Elling (Washington, Pa.) went 2-for-3 and scored once in game one against the Buckeyes. Senior Marlaina Laubach (Northampton, Pa.) secured the complete game victory in game one, striking out four and giving up seven hits.
The Nittany Lions tied a season-high 15 hits in game two, scoring seven runs which included a three-run sixth inning. Sophomore Toni Polk (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) led the Blue and White at the plate in game two, going 4-for-5 at the dish with two RBI and scoring once, while senior Shelby Miller (Sugar Land, Texas) brought in two runs on a double off the right center field wall. Finally, four other Nittany Lions secured two hits apiece in game two against Ohio State.
Freshman Madey Smith (Washington, N.J.) suffered the loss in the circle and both Madison Seifert (Wildwood, Mo.) and Madison Shaffer (New Castle, Pa.) each saw time in the circle. Shaffer went a complete four innings in relief, securing three scoreless innings of work.
Ashley Goodwin led the Buckeyes in their game two victory, going 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI and scoring once and Maddie Marotti brought in three runs on three hits in game two. Shelby Hursh suffered the loss in game one against the Nittany Lions, while Shelby McCombs improved to 5-0 on the season in the game two win.
Game One: Penn State 2, No. 25 Ohio State 1
Ohio State looked as if they it was going to be the first to light up the scoreboard when a hard hit ball up the third baseline was deflected back toward the short stop with two outs and runners on second and third. Gianna Arrizurieta (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) quickly made her way to the ball and threw out the runner heading home to save the run and close out the inning to keep the game scoreless.
After three and a half scoreless innings at Beard Field, Weber worked the count to full with runners on first and second before driving a double off the left field wall to score two and give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Following its two runs, the Penn State defense notched a shutdown inning capped off with a bases loaded Laubach looking strikeout to hold onto its 2-0 advantage.
Ohio State started a two-out rally in the top of the seventh inning with two-straight singles to put runners on first and third. Lilli Piper worked herself into a pickle between first and second, allowing Alex Bayne to touch home. A hard hit ball to third base would prove to be the final out of the game as Penn State went onto a 2-1 victory over the No. 25 Buckeyes.
Game Two: Ohio State 10, Penn State 7
The Buckeyes wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game two as back-to-back singles and a suicide squeeze scored a run and take the 1-0 lead. Ohio State tacked on four more runs in the top of the first on back-to-back hits into left field that plated two runs each and allowed it to take a 5-0 lead.
Penn State chipped away at the OSU lead in the bottom half of the inning using three-straight hits, two of which went up the middle, to come within four of the Buckeyes. The Nittany Lions added their second run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Polk singled through the right of the infield to bring in Elling from third base.
Ohio State added four runs on five hits and one error to extend its lead to 9-2 in the top of the fourth inning. The Nittany Lions made their second pitching change of the game following the third inning as Shaffer came in and shut down the Buckeyes for two-straight innings.
Tori Dubois (Mt. Vernon, N.H.) earned a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth inning and came around to touch home on a Mollie Sorenson (Stephenson Ranch, Calif.) single through the left side of the infield as the Nittany Lions trailed 9-3. Ohio State answered in the top of the fifth with a run of its own to take the 10-3 lead over the Blue and White.
The Scarlett and Gray added one run in the top of the sixth but Penn State answered with three of its own on three-straight singles and a double off the wall from Miller to come within four, 10-6. The Nittany Lions continued to battle in the bottom of the seventh when Mia Monopoli (Sacramento, Calif.) led off with a double into left field and came around to score on a Polk double into right center. With two outs on the board, the Blue and White was unable to manufacture any further runs falling 10-7 in the nightcap.

The Penn State softball team will embark on its 10th road trip of the year Friday, April 14-Sunday, April 16 when it travels to Lincoln, Nebraska for the three-game series against the Cornhuskers. The Nittany Lions will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday night before game two Saturday, April 15 at 4 p.m. Penn State closes out the weekend with an Easter Sunday contest slated for 1 p.m.
