COLLEGE PARK, Md. ââ'¬" A four-run first inning led Maryland to an 8-3 victory over Penn State in Big Ten baseball action Saturday afternoon in Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Second baseman Christian Helsel (Altoona, Pa.) and first baseman Brett Davis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tallied the lone RBIs for Penn State (12-22, 1-7 B1G). RHP Justin Hagenman (Voorhees, N.J.) (1-6) battled through 4 2/3 innings, yielding six runs on nine hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Second baseman Nick Dunn and designated hitter Will Watson accounted for six of Maryland's (24-11, 8-3 B1G) 10 hits, as both tallied three hits. Dunn reached base four times and scored twice, while Watson doubled, drove in three runs and scored once. LHP Tyler Blohm (5-3) worked seven innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts.
Dunn hit an RBI-single and Watson followed with a two-RBI double on back-to-back pitches with one out to start the scoring, and left fielder Madison Nickens added an RBI-single with two outs for the early 4-0 advantage.
Watson tallied his third RBI of the day in the third on a single through the left side, but Penn State cut the deficit to two over the fourth and fifth innings.
Davis got Penn State on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly. Right fielder Braxton Giavedoni (Punxsutawney, Pa.) and catcher Ryan Sloniger (Punxsutawney, Pa.) led the inning off with singles, with both advancing into scoring position on Sloniger's check swing that resulted in an errant throw to first by Blohm.
The Nittany Lions strung together hits to start the fifth as well, as designated hitter Alex Malinsky (Apex, N.C.) singled off the inside of Blohm's foot to lead the frame off, and centerfielder Nick Riotto (Washington, Pa.) followed with a double to the right corner that was misplayed, allowing Malinsky to score and Riotto to advance to third. Helsel followed with a groundout to plate Riotto.
The Terps restored the five-run advantage over the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings though. Shortstop Kevin Smith hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and an error and then a sacrifice fly by right fielder Marty Costes added two more runs for the final 8-3 Terrapin advantage.
Penn State and Maryland will conclude the series starting Sunday at 1 p.m.
