UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" A four-run first inning sent Penn State on its way to a 9-2 victory over Lafayette in non-conference baseball action Wednesday evening on Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Penn State (14-26) was paced by four batters with two-hit nights. Freshman centerfielder Mason Nadeau (Lansdale, Pa.) hit his first career home run as part of a 2-for-4 effort at the plate, while left fielder Nick Riotto (Washington, Pa.) led the way with three RBIs on a 2-for-3 night that included a double, walk and sacrifice fly. Shortstop Conlin Hughes (Holly Springs, N.C.) went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI, while designated hitter Alex Malinsky went 2-for-3 with a walk and run.

The Lions were also strong on the mound. RHP Schuyler Bates (Ossining, N.Y.) (2-3) earned the win, working five innings and allowing the two runs on five hits and with no walks and one strikeout. RHP Dakota Forsyth (Bethel Park, Pa.), LHP Taylor Lehman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and RHP Nick Distasio (Oley, Pa.) kept the Leopards scoreless the rest of the way, yielding just five more hits and a ninth-inning walk - the lone walk yielded by Penn State in the game.

The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Hughes started the scoring by driving in one with the bases loaded and one out, and Riotto immediately followed with a sacrifice fly for the second run. First baseman Brett Davis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) then hit a pop-up in front of the pitcher's mound that the pitcher dropped, allowing Hughes and Riotto to both score.

Lafayette answered with two runs in the top of the second to halve the deficit. Right fielder Luke Robinson and first baseman Alex Woinski led the frame off with singles, and with one out, both moved up a base on an errant pick-off throw before scoring on a base hit to center by designated hitter Trey Durrah.

Penn State would score the next five runs for the final margin. Third baseman Logan Goodnight (Wheeling, W.Va.) dropped an RBI base-hit in centerfield in the third inning, and then after two scoreless innings, the Lions added three runs in the sixth. Malinsky led the inning off with a base hit and Nadeau followed with a home run into the right field bleachers. Riotto later in the frame drew a bases-loaded walk for an 8-2 lead, and he lined a double off the right field wall in the eighth for his third RBI.

Penn State will next head west to Iowa for a three-game Big Ten series starting Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
