IOWA CITY, IOWA ââ'¬" Iowa completed a doubleheader sweep of Penn State with an 8-2 victory over the Nittany Lions in Big Ten baseball action that started at 10:33 p.m. CT and stretched into Saturday morning.

The two teams elected to play two games Friday night due to a weather forecast of rain for the rest of the weekend. They will try to get the third and final game of the series in Saturday starting at 3:05 p.m. ET.

In the second game of the night, Iowa (26-15, 8-6 B1G) benefitted from its second strong starting pitching effort of the day. LHP Ryan Erickson worked 7 1/3 innings, getting charged with one run after he left in the eighth, as he yielded just four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Freshmen Mason Nadeau (Lansing, Pa.) and Brett Davis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) paced Penn State (14-28, 2-12 B1G) at the plate by driving in a run each. RHP Justin Hagenman (1-8) suffered the loss after four innings of work for the Nittany Lions, striking out three. RHP Nick Distasio worked three innings in relief, striking out five and yielding a run on two hits and a walk.

Batting ninth in the Hawkeye lineup, second baseman Mitchell Boe paced the home team at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double and triple, and three RBIs. Iowa took command of the game by scoring four runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-RBI double by Boe and capped with a run-scoring error. The third inning was scoreless but designated hitter Austin Guzzo and third baseman Matt Hoeg led the fourth off with back-to-back doubles to score a run, and after a sacrifice bunt, Boe tripled for a 6-0 advantage.

The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless, but starting with the bottom of the seventh, each team scored one run each in the remaining half innings. Iowa added a run in the seventh and the Nittany Lions got on the board in the top of the eighth on Nadeau's single through the right side to score designated hitter Keith Leavitt (Manchester, Mass.) Pinch hitter Grant Judkins slugged a home run for Iowa in the bottom of the eighth, and then Davis hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth for Penn State for the final margin.

The Hawkeyes won the first game of the night, 4-2.
