BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ââ'¬" RHP Sal Biasi (Hazle Township, Pa.) allowed just one run in seven innings and freshman Brett Davis (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) enjoyed a career day at the plate as Penn State defeated Indiana, 5-2, in Big Ten baseball action Friday evening in Bart Kaufman Field.

Penn State (16-33, 3-16 Big Ten) earned its second win of the week over a top-25 RPI team after defeating West Virginia, also on the road, Tuesday. West Virginia and Indiana (27-19-2, 10-8-1 Big Ten), entering Friday ranking 20th and 23rd, respectively, are the highest-ranking RPI teams Penn State has played since opening the season at TCU.

Biasi (5-5) kept the Hoosiers in check for seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits and three walks with six strikeouts. He stranded a pair of runners in scoring position in the second and ended the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts. Biasi was up to 110 pitches after six innings, but came back out for the seventh and retired the side in order with just eight pitches, striking out the final batter.

Extra-base hits powered the Nittany Lion offense as third baseman Logan Goodnight (Wheeling, W.Va.) tripled and scored, and shortstop Conlin Hughes (Holly Springs, N.C.) and Davis both hit solo home runs. The home run was Davis' first and he also went a career-high 2-for-4 with two RBIs, driving in an insurance run in the ninth.

Goodnight tripled off the wall in right with one out in the third inning for the game's first run. After another out, Hughes homered to left field for a 2-0 advantage.

They were the first runs allowed by Indiana RHP Jonathan Stiever (3-3) in 20 innings. Stiever also worked seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits with no walks allowed and seven strikeouts.

Indiana catcher Ryan Fineman poked a two-out, RBI-single to right in the fourth to put the Hoosiers on the board, but Davis' home run to left gave Penn State a 3-1 lead.

With LHP Taylor Lehman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) on the mound to start the eighth, Indiana trimmed the deficit to one again. Designated hitter Matt Lloyd led the inning off with a double to the left gap, and he scored on a base hit up the middle by third baseman Luke Miller. Lehman was able to get a strikeout though before RHP Nick Distasio (4) entered the game, getting back-to-back fly outs to right to end the inning.

Penn State gave Distasio some breathing room in the top of the ninth, adding a pair of insurance runs on RBI-hits by second baseman Christian Helsel (Altoona, Pa.) and Davis. Distasio plunked one batter in the bottom half for his only base runner allowed.

Penn State and Indiana continue the series Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
