BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana took advantage of Penn State's miscues to clinch the Big Ten baseball series between the schools, 10-2, Sunday afternoon on Bart Kaufman Field.
Penn State (16-35, 3-18 Big Ten) totaled seven hits and four walks but stranded eight runners to manage just one earned run. Shortstop Conlin Hughes (Holly Springs, N.C.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the offense, and senior Christian Helsel (Altoona, Pa.) hit a solo home run in the ninth.
Indiana (29-19-2, 12-8-1) stranded just four runners after totaling 10 hits and four walks. Centerfielder Craig Dedelow paced the offense with a 3-for-4 effort that included two doubles, a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Additionally, second baseman Tony Butler drove in four runs, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs, and right fielder Logan Sowers went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. RHP Cal Krueger (3-1) only yielded an unearned run on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
RHP Eric Mock (Shillington, Pa.) (0-5) appeared poised to get out of the first inning with runners on first and second and two outs, as he popped up Dedelow in an 0-2 count, but the ball landed in the infield untouched for a run-scoring double. A wild pitch allowed another run to score and Sowers doubled to right-center to drive in another hard-luck earned run on Mock.
They would be the only runs allowed by Mock who worked 3 1/3 innings and struck out four, allowing the three runs on four hits and two walks.
Penn State cut the deficit to two in the fifth inning on an RBI-single by Hughes that scored centerfielder Mason Nadeau (Lansdale, Pa.) from second. Nadeau reached on a pair of errors.
Indiana restored the three-run advantage the very next frame though as designated hitter Matt Lloyd hit an RBI-single.
In the bottom of the seventh, Indiana tacked on two runs on a double by Butler. Shortstop Jeremy Houston reached on an error and left fielder Alex Krupa walked, and both moved into scoring position with stolen bases before Butler stepped to the plate.
Dedelow and Sowers hit back-to-back home runs to lead-off a four-run eighth, and Helsel's homer in the top of the ninth resulted in the final margin.
Just four home games remain for the Nittany Lions. Penn State begins its final homestand of the season Tuesday against Villanova at 6:30 p.m. It will be the last "Two for Tuesday" game of the year, as two tickets can be purchased for the price of one.
