FOXBORO, Mass. - The fourth-seeded Penn State women's lacrosse team advanced to its second-consecutive NCAA National Semifinals after defeating Princeton, 14-12, on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
The Nittany Lions will battle top-seeded Maryland at 5 p.m. on Friday at Gillette Stadium in the first semifinal before Boston College battles Navy to determine the two teams who will compete for a National Championship at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Both semifinals are available on ESPN3 and will be tape delayed on ESPNU on Saturday at 7 and 9 p.m., respectively. The National Championship game will air live on ESPNU.
THE MATCHUP
- Penn State and Maryland will meet for the 55th time on Friday with the Terrapins holding a 39-14-1 advantage.
- Maryland is Penn State's most frequent opponent in women's lacrosse as the two teams have played every season since 1973.
- The Terps have won the last 12 meetings and 28 of the last 29 dating back to 1992.
- In 2016 Penn State nearly defeated the Terps taking the 8-7 lead with just 10:27 to play after three consecutive goals, but Maryland used a 3-1 run to close the game and secure the one-goal victory, 10-9.
LAST TIME THEY MET
- Penn State secured the second most goals the Terps have allow this season as they fell 16-14 at home on April 20.
- The game also marked the only time this season Maryland had not had a halftime lead (the game was tied 6-6) until last weekend when Stony Brook held a 7-6 lead over the Terps after 30 minutes.
- Senior Cat Rainone turned in a career-high 15 saves in the setback.
- Sophomore Madison Carter tied her career-high with six goals while junior Katie O'Donnell added five for the Lions. Senior Steph Lazo also scored twice while adding three assists for five points.
LOOKING TO SHOCK THE WORLD
- The Nittany Lions will look for their first win over a top-ranked opponent since March 19, 2005. The 2005 season was special as Penn State beat two No. 1 teams that year: Virginia (March 11) and Princeton (March 19), before falling to its third No. 1 foe, Northwestern (April 15). PSU rose as high as No. 2 in the nation that season.
MOVIN' ON UP
- Junior Katie O'Donnell is currently riding a 21-game goal streak and has scored multiple goals in seven straight contests. O'Donnell has 28 goals in her last seven games to lead the team over that stretch.
- After yet another hat trick on Sunday, the junior has lept into tenth on the Penn State all-time goals list with 138.
CAN'T STOP CARTER
- Carter currently stands at 69 goals on the season to lead the Big Ten and rank ninth in the nation. Her 69 goals are the sixth most in a single-season in Penn State history. Last Sunday Carter passed Marsha Florio's 68 goals in 1983 for the most goals by a Penn State sophomore in a single season.
- Carter ranks second in the Big Ten and ninth in the nation, averaging 6.15 draws per game after back-to-back 12 draw performances. Her 123 draws on the second also ranks second in the Big Ten and eighth in the nation.
MY MARIA
- Freshman Maria Auth has really come into her own late in the season and is riding a multi-goal streak of four games leading into the NCAA Semifinals.
- Auth has scored 11 of her 17 goals on the season over the last four games including a career-high four goals in the quarterfinal victory over Princeton.
- Auth has 16 points, more than half of her season total, during the last four games including a career-high five against Princeton.
ABOUT MARYLAND
- The Terps have won 12 National Championships since the NCAA added lacrosse in 1982, including two of the last three titles in 2014 and 2015 before being knocked off by UNC in last year's championship game.
- Maryland is led by five IWLCA All-Americans including three first-teamers as Zoe Stukenberg, Nadine Hadnagy and Megan Taylor all landed on the first-team and Megan Whittle and Caroline Wannen earned second-team recognition. In addition to that, Stukenberg and Hadnagy are 2-of-5 Tewaaraton finalists.
- The Terrapins are a perfect 21-0 and are led by Whittle with 66 goals and 80 points while Kali Hartshorn and Stukenberg have added 52 and 50 goals, respectively.
- UMD has seven players with 20-plus goals as Caroline Steele has added 49, Jen Giles has 35, Wannen has scored 33 and Taylore Hensh has added 28.
- Megan Taylor paces the Terps between the pipes with a 20-0 record, .541 save percentage and a 9.20 goals against average. Her save percentage and GAA rank second and 14th in the nation, respectively.
- Maryland has scored the most goals in the nation with 354 on the season and its 16.86 goals per game also ranks first in the nation.
- The Terps are also third in the nation with a 7.67 scoring margin as they rank 14th in scoring defense allowing just 9.19 goals per game.
LOOKING AHEAD
- Penn State looks to advance to its first NCAA National Championship since winning the whole thing in 1989.
- The Nittany Lions would play the winner of the Boston College and Navy game and be facing either team for the first time in program history.
