FOXBORO, Mass. - Junior Katie O'Donnell (West Chester, Pa.) scored four goals, but it was not enough as the top-seeded Maryland Terrapins defeated No. 4 Penn State, 20-10, this evening in the NCAA National Semifinals from Gillette Stadium.
The Terps improve to 22-0 on the season and move on to Sunday's National Championship game where they will face the winner of the second National Semifinal between Boston College and Navy. The Nittany Lions see their season come to a close at 17-4 overall.
"It definitely didn't go our way today," commented Head Coach Missy Doherty. "I'm so proud of our players to get us here and the season that we had was just awesome."
Prenn State drew first blood as freshman Maria Auth (Street, Md.) continued her scoring streak by potting a free-position tally just 93 seconds into the contest. However, Maryland responded and scored the next four goals including a pair by Zoe Stukenberg to grab the 4-1 edge at the 24:25 mark.
The Terps then sandwiched a goal between a pair of Nittany Lion scores from sophomore Madison Carter (Davidsonville, Md.) and junior Maggie Gallagher (Bel Air, Md.) before embarking on a 5-1 run over the next nine minutes of play with Taylor Hensh scoring a pair for the Terps who grabbed the 10-4 lead at the 9:15 mark.
O'Donnell got one back for the Lions late in the half, but it was answered by Kali Hartshorn and the Terrapins took the 11-5 lead into the intermission.
Jen Giles scored two straight goals to open the second half before Gallagher netted her second of the game as she scooped up a loose ball around the crease and finished for the 13-6 deficit at the 21:31 mark.
Following another Maryland score, Gallagher finished the hat trick on a feed from senior Steph Lazo (Stevensville, Md.) at 18:57 before Lazo corralled her own rebound and found the back of the cage just over a minute later for the 14-8 score at the 17:43 mark.
The Terps then used a 4-0 scoring run to hit running time at 10:55 of the second half after a goal from Hensh made the score 18-8. Both teams traded a pair of goals each over the closing minutes as O'Donnell scored twice for the Lions to account for the 20-10 final.
Senior Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.) falls to 16-4 on the year after stopping eight shots while her counterpart, Megan Taylor, improves to 21-0 for the Terps after a 10 save performance.
NOTES
- The 17 wins for Penn State is the most since 1989 when the Lions won 19 games and it also ties for the second most in a single season with the 1987 and 1979 seasons.
- With her four goals, O'Donnell ties Michele DeJulius for ninth on the all-time goals list with 142. After a two-point game, Lazo finishes her Penn State career seventh on the all-time scoring list with 211 points.
- Maryland won the first seven draws of the game to jump out to the 4-1 lead. The Terps controlled the draw all game finishing with the 22-10 advantage.
- Eleven goals allowed in the first half is the most all season by the Nittany Lions. It is also the most given up in single-half all season and just the second time Penn State has allowed 10 or more goals in a half. The other was the second half against Maryland on April 20 where the Terps scored 10 goals.
- Carter becomes just the fourth different Nittany Lion to score 70 or more goals in a single-season as she registers the fifth such campaign in program history and first since Tami Worley scored 78 goals in 1989.
