UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" Minnesota jumped out to an early lead en route to a 17-1 victory over Penn State in Big Ten baseball action Saturday afternoon on Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Minnesota (28-15, 11-6 Big Ten) scored in each of the first four innings to build an 11-0 lead, and added three runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth on a three-run home run by third baseman Micah Coffey. Coffey paced the Golden Gophers by hitting for the cycle, ultimately going 4-for-5 with four runs, six RBIs and a walk.
Freshman centerfielder Mason Nadeau (Lansdale, Pa.) hit his second home run of the season to pace the Penn State (14-31, 2-15 Big Ten) offense, while catcher Alex Malinsky (Apex, N.C.) joined Nadeau with a two-hit game, hitting a double and base hit. Nadeau's home run went over the right field wall in the sixth inning.
The Gophers had six players record multi-hit games. Shortstop Terrin Vavra finished a home run shy of the cycle and right fielder Jordan Smith matched Coffey's four hits. Second baseman Luke Pettersen doubled as part of a two-hit day and drove in three runs.
First baseman Toby Hanson, who finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run, drove in the game's first score and Pettersen capped the five-run opening frame with a two-RBI single up the middle. Vavra doubled to give Minnesota two runners in scoring position to lead off the second, and Coffey singled to score both. Smith added an RBI-single to cap the three-run inning.
The early 8-0 cushion was more than enough for RHP Brett Schulze (4-2), who worked seven innings and allowed the one run on four hits with eight strikeouts and no walks allowed.
RHP Justin Hagenman (Voorhees, N.J.) (1-9) was charged with the loss, while RHP Jake Pilewicz (Sewickley, Pa.) worked five innings of long relief.
Penn State and Minnesota are set to conclude the series Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
