UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State men's golf student-athlete Cole Miller will tee off at the 2017 U.S. Amateur on Monday, Aug. 14 at 12:57 p.m. PT (3:57 p.m. ET) on the famous 10th hole at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California.
Each of the 312 participants plays a round on each of the two courses with Miller scheduled for his second round Tuesday, Aug. 15 on the Bel-Air Country Club course in Los Angeles.
"For me, this trip is a test to see if I can put together everything I have learned over the past year," said Miller, who is making his second trip to this prestigious event. "I'm really excited to be playing at such a historic and challenging venue and I just want to see what my game is made of."
The USGA website will provide live scoring throughout the event and live network coverage on FS1 and Fox begins with the Round-of-64 matches on Wednesday, Aug. 16.
From New Tripoli, Pennsylvania, Miller was an honorable mention PING All-America selection and All-Big Ten pick following a solid 2017 spring and made his mark by becoming one of only two Penn State golfers to win an NCAA Regional. With his individual championship at the 2017 NCAA Regional at Washington, Miller, was invited to play in the British Amateur at the Royal St. George's Golf Club and Princes Golf Club in June.
"One of the biggest things I've learned over this summer is how to manage my bad rounds so that I still make decent scores and keep myself in tournaments," said Miller, who played in several events, including his trip to England, following the NCAA Championships. "My mental game has come a long way in the sense that I never get myself out of a round, which, to me, is pretty special."
The rising senior won the U.S. Amateur qualifier at the Colonial Golf and Tennis Club in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in July. He played in his first U.S. Amateur in 2015 at Olympia Fields Country Club in Illinois. "There are incredible benefits in playing in the U.S. Amateur, especially for someone who plays well," Miller said. "At the very least I hope to gain championship-level golf experience and be able to use that in our upcoming season! Our (Penn State) goals are set high this year and I know we can achieve them. For me, I also think a good performance here is the next stepping stone for me in my goal of turning professional."
