WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Penn State women's golf team led through all three rounds of play en route to a first-place finish at the William and Mary Invitational. Junior Jackie Rogowicz (Yardley, Pa.) came from behind to secure individual first place after shooting a third round 70 (-2) this afternoon at the River Course at Kingsmill Resort.
The Nittany Lion's shot a 296 (plus-8) during the opening round and a 294 (plus-6) in round two yesterday, giving them a two-stroke lead heading into today's final round. The ladies secured their first-place finish today by shooting a 298 (plus-10) to end the tournament with a three-round score of 888 (plus-24).
Head Coach Denise St. Pierre is extremely proud of her team in the way they performed in the opening tournament of the fall. "It was a team effort, in that on any given round we used somebody's different score," St. Pierre said, "It was a good thing that everyone contributed."
Rogowicz took home her first career first-place finish after winning the opening playoff hole against UNC Wilmington's Thao My Nguyen. Rogowicz had the only eagle of the tournament on the third hole of the first round. She also had her best round of play today with five birdies and finished the third round two-under (70).
"I played well the entire tournament," commented Rogowicz, "The difference today was I kept the big numbers off the scorecard, when I got in trouble I was able to scramble to save bogey."
Rogowicz's first-place finish marks the first for a Nittany Lion since Christina Vosters won the 2014 Briar's Creek Invitational.
Junior Lauren Waller (Canonsburg, Pa.) finished tied for eighth with a three-round score of 224 (plus-8) and a low-round score of 74 (plus-2) in the third round. Fellow junior Cara Basso (Downingtown, Pa.) also finished tied for eighth.
Both sophomore Maddy Herr (New Hope, Pa.) and junior Kamerine Taylor (Dublin, Oh.) had top 20 finishes. The girls each had three-round scores of 228 (plus-12) leaving them tied for 16th.
The Nittany Lions have two weeks off before hosting the Nittany Lion Invitational (Sep. 22-23) at the Penn State Blue Course.
