LANCASTER, Pa. - No. 2 Penn State dropped its first contest of the 2017 season Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 loss to the defending NCAA Champion No. 6 Delaware Blue Hens (6-1) at the home of USA Field Hockey ("The Nook") in Lancaster, Pa.
"I thought that Delaware was very impressive today," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss.
"We didn't take care of the opportunities we had in the circle. I thought that our kids gave what they had in their tanks, but it just seemed that we didn't have enough in the tank to start. I'm proud of their effort, and I think it was a really exciting field hockey game. We'll regroup and get ready for this coming weekend."
Delaware's Lisa Giezeman put one past Jenny Rizzo to take an early 1-0 lead six minutes into the game rolling from right to left before firing into the back of the cage.
Though it was Delaware who netted the goal early it was Penn State who was aggressive, finishing the first half with double the amount of shots as the Blue Hens (12-6).
Just as the first, the second half saw Delaware score one goal to make it a 2-0 Blue Hen lead that would hold through the end of regulation.
Penn State (7-1) held the advantage in penalty corners 7-5, as well as total shots 17-11, while Delaware led the game in saves with 11 as a team.
Penn State will be back in action Friday, Sept. 22 at 5 p.m. when the Nittany Lions host Northwestern in the second Big Ten contest of the season at Field Hockey Complex.
