DULUTH, Minn. - The Penn State women's hockey team opened its sixth season as a varsity program with a 1-0 loss to the No. 5 Minnesota Duluth Friday night at the AMSOIL Arena.

The Bulldogs (1-0-0) struck early in the game as Jalyn Elmes put Minnesota Duluth in front 1-0 at 1:22 into the contest. Following the Bulldog goal, the Nittany Lion defense closed out the final 58:38 of the game with 22-straight saves.

The two teams went into the first intermission with shots in favor of Minnesota Duluth, 7-4. The second period saw the Nittany Lions (0-1-0) outshoot the Bulldogs, 11-8.

Down the final minutes of the regulation, the Nittany Lions pulled goalie Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) for an extra attacker, but were unable to find the game-tying to goal to send the contest into overtime.

Junior defenseman Kelsey Crow (Minnetonka, Minn.) and freshman forward Natalie Heising (Maple Grove, Minn.) paced the Nittany Lion offense with four shot attempts each.

In net, Ehresmann recorded 22 saves, while Jessica Convery also tallied 22 saves for the Bulldogs.

The two teams close out the first-ever series between the two schools on Saturday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m. (EDT) at the AMSOIL Arena.

NOTES: Minnesota Duluth outshot Penn State, 23-22…Penn State went 0-for-2 on the power play, while Minnesota Duluth went 0-for-3…The Nittany Lions went 24-of-40 in the faceoff circle...Head coach Jeff Kampersal made his Penn State debut.
