UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A four goal third period helped No. 4 Penn State erase a one-goal deficit and earn the weekend sweep against Michigan State with a, 5-3, victory in Big Ten Conference play this evening from Pegula Ice Arena.

The Nittany Lions are now 16-2-1 on the year and 5-1-0-0 in the Big Ten while the Spartans fall to 4-15-1 overall and 0-6-0-0 in conference play.

COACHES TAKE

"I thought it was a really good game all along. I don't think we lacked. I thought we played very well the entire game. I give our guys a ton of credit, this was an excellent game and an excellent win."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Michigan State once again opened the scoring as Taro Hirose stayed with the play after his initial shot was stopped and collected the rebound in the right slot, turned toward the cage and beat PSU freshman goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) under the left pad for the 1-0 lead at 13:12 of the first period.
  • Penn State then benefitted from an early second period penalty against MSU as just 29 seconds into the period sophomore Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) was the beneficiary of a pair of great passes from junior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) and sophomore Kevin Kerr (Bensalem, Pa.) for power-play goal and 1-1 score.
  • The Spartans then registered a power-play goal of their own to recapture the lead as Mason Appleton redirected a Taro Hirose shot out in front of the net for the 2-1 lead at 14:32 of the middle frame.
  • Sophomore Vince Pedrie (Rochester, Minn.) would cause a neutral zone turnover midway through the third period and break in on an offensive zone rush feeding the puck from right to left finding senior Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) on the left of the crease for the 2-2 score at 9:31.
  • Penn State then erupted for three goals in just 2:44, including back-to-back scores in just nine seconds to grab the commanding 5-2 lead with just over two minutes remaining in regulation.
  • Senior Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alberta) potted his sixth of the year at 15:06 before Berger tallied his second of the game and third of the series off a pass from senior David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) at 15:15 for the 4-2 lead.
  • Freshman Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) registered the final tally of the evening for the Blue and White as he made a nifty move in front of the crease before roofing the puck past Spartan net-minder Ed Minney for the 5-2 score at 17:50 of the third period.
  • MSU secured a late goal by Damian Chrcek with just 12 seconds left on the clock to account for the final score.

GOALTENDING

Jones improves to 14-1-1 on the year after collecting 25 saves while Minney falls to 4-11-1 after stopping 46 pucks. With the victory Jones becomes the new all-time leader at Penn State for single-season wins by a goaltender breaking Eamon McAdam's record of 13 from last season.

NOTES

  • Penn State outshot the visitors 51-28 and converted 2-of-5 power-play chances while MSU went 1-for-5 with the man-advantage.
  • Penn State has now won 12 straight games at home sweeping six different opponents , which is a new single season record passing the five sweeps they secured during the 2014-15 season.
  • The Nittany Lions improve to 8-0-0 when getting 50 or more shots on goal this season and have registered at least 45 shots in 13 of their last 14 games.
  • This game marked just the third time all season Penn State had trailed after the first period and after the second period.
  • This was also just the fourth time the Nittany Lions have been held scoreless during the opening 20 minutes, third in their last four games.
  • Trevor Hamilton tied Luke Juha '16 for the Penn State single-season record for assists by a defenseman as he now has 16 after his two helpers this evening.
  • With his second period power-play goal, Chase Berger has now recorded at least one goal in each of his last three games and has five points during that span (4G, 1A).
  • The nine seconds between Richard and Berger's third period goals is now the fastest back-to-back goals Penn State has scored in program history eclipsing the 11 seconds it took Smirnov and sophomore Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) to score during the first period against Arizona State earlier this season.
