STORRS, Conn. - The Penn State women's hockey team tied Yale, 2-2, after a pair of third period goals for the Nittany Lions in the consolation game of the Nutmeg Classic at Freitas Ice Forum Saturday, Nov. 25.
Freshman Natalie Heising (Maple Grove, Minn.) scored her fourth goal of the season to bring Penn State (2-7-8) within one goal in the third period before Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minn.) knotted the score at 2-2 with 1:51 remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. Neither team was able to score in the five-minute overtime period, as the game would end in a 2-2 tie.
Goaltender Hannah Ehresmann (Minnetonka, Minn.) made 16 saves in the contest, while the Penn State offense tested Yale's Gianna Meloni a total of 38 times in 65 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs (2-6-4) lit the lamp under two minutes into the contest when Emma Vlasic found the back of the net at 1:40 in the first period to take a 1-0 lead over the Nittany Lions.
The Blue and White found itself on the penalty kill early in the second period that would result in the second goal of the game for Vlasic to extend Yale's lead to 2-0 lead at 6:55.
The Nittany Lions came got on the scoreboard in the third period when Heising scored for the fourth time this season at 6:55. Following a power play, Sutton tied the score at 2-2 at 18:09 to send Penn State into its fourth-straight overtime game.
The Blue and White managed two shots in the five-minute overtime period but neither team was able to score, ending the contest in a 2-2 tie.
Penn State closes out the fall semester with a pair of games at RIT on Dec. 1-2. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester, N.Y.
NOTES: Saturday's game was the first meeting between the two programs...Penn State played its fourth-straight overtime game and 10th of the season, which ties a program record (2015-16)...The Nittany Lions outshot Yale, 38-18...Penn State went 1-for-7 on the power play, while Yale went 1-for-2...Sutton recorded her seventh career multi-point game and her fourth career one-goal and one-assist game.
