Nov. 3, 2017

Final Stats

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The William and Mary Invite began today for the Penn State men's tennis team. The Lions had four players travel to Williamsburg, Va. where they will pair up with Middle Tennessee State University for the duration of the final tournament. Competition is being held at the Millie West Tennis Facility in Williamsburg.

The tournament uses singles and doubles flight formats. In the opening day of play Penn State and MTSU faced off against William and Mary paired with Old Dominion University.

Ben Lieb (Newtown Square, Pa.) faced off against Old Dominion's Jannik Giesse in his singles match. The Nittany Lion won 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. Gabriel Nemeth (Brasilia, Brazil) took on Wiliam and Mary's Finbar Talcott and defeated Talcott in a toug match, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5. Noah Sutter (New York, NY) played William and Mary's Louis Newman but was defeated 6-3, 6-2. Matt Galush (Cary, NC) was paired against William and Mary's Sebastian Quiros but lost 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, Lieb and Nemeth faced off against William and Mary's Finbar Talcott and Lars de Boer but were defeated in a close match 7-6 (3). Sutter and Galush played against a combined pair of Old Dominion's Jannik Giesse and William and Mary's Sebastian Quiros, but lost in a tiebreak 7-6 (4).

"I like this format since it gives us a more realistic idea of how the guys would do in true lineup positions," said associate head coach Paul Tobin. "I thought both Gabe and Ben played well and came out on top against ODU and Willam & Mary's higher lineup guys. We had opportunities in doubles with both teams going to a tiebreak but we got a little bit loose at the end. We're going to make some adjustments and come out strong against Harvard tomorrow."
