UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. ââ'¬" The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced on Monday (Nov. 6) that Penn State women's basketball student-athlete Teniya Page (Chicago) is one of 20 members on the watch list for the 2018 Nancy Lieberman Award.
The award, now in its nineteenth year, recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I basketball. Candidates exhibit the floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills of Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman.
Already among 10 student-athletes named to the Big Ten Preseason all-conference team, Page is coming off of a 2016-17 season that saw her earn All-America honorable mention honors from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). She also became just the fourth Lady Lion sophomore to earn a consensus All-Big Ten first team selection, garnering the distinction from both the coaches and media.
With her Penn State Big Ten Tournament record 35 points vs. Minnesota on March 2, Page moved herself into the conversation as one of the most prolific players in Penn State history. She became just the fourth Lady Lion to reach the 1,000-point mark by the end of her sophomore season, a club includes Page, Maggie Lucas, Kelly Mazzante and Susan Robinson. She ended the season with 1,091 career points and is tied for No. 32 on the career scoring charts.
Among other career rankings for Page, she became the 15th player to make 100 career 3-pointers, one of 19 Penn Stater's to pile up at least 1,000 points and 200 assists and her five career 30-point games currently rank No. 4 all-time at Penn State.
In 2016-17, the Chicago native became the first Lady Lion to make 200 field goals, 60 3-pointers and 100 free throws, while also handing out 100 assists, in a single season in program history.
Page was the ninth Lady Lion to score 600-plus points in a single season with 618 points during her 2016-17 campaign, reaching double-figures in 30-of-32 games played. Of her 30 games in double-digits, she registered 15 20-point games, including four 30-point efforts. Her point total ranks No. 4 on the single season sophomore charts and No. 9 on the all-class season charts.
Penn State is coming off of a 21-11 showing in 2016-17 and a third-round appearance in the Women's National Invitation Tournament. The Lady Lions will play 14 games inside the Bryce Jordan Center in 2017-18, including eight Big Ten contests. The 2017-18 season kicks off on Friday, Nov. 10 vs. Siena at 7 p.m. on the University Park campus.
