COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore goaltender Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) earns his first shutout of the season and the third of his career helping Penn State defeat No. 11 Ohio State, 4-0, in Big Ten Conference action this afternoon from Value City Arena.

Penn State improves to 9-7-2 on the season and 4-4-2-1 in the Big Ten while the Buckeyes fall to 8-4-4 overall and 3-4-1-0 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Penn State opened the scoring early in the second period as senior Trevor Hamilton (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) flicked the puck up the glass connecting with junior Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) who toe-dragged in the slot and fired high-glove beating Sean Romeo for his program-best ninth career shorthanded goal and his third of the season at 1:22 of the second period for the 1-0 edge.
  • The Nittany Lions extended the lead during an abbreviated power-play chance as sophomore Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alb.) took the puck along the far boards and fed it to classmate Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) who skated into the slot and fired bar-down over the blocker for the 2-0 lead at 6:21 of the middle frame.
  • PSU extended the lead early in the third period as Hamilton fed Biro down below the left circle and the sophomore one-touched it past the pad of Romeo for the 3-0 advantage at 4:49.
  • Sophomore Liam Folkes (Scarborough, Ont.) then put the finishing touches on the game as he skated into the zone after receiving a pass from freshman Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa.) and lit the lamp for the 4-0 score at 15:22 of the third period.
