PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Sophomore James Gobetz (St. James, N.Y.) registers his first-career multi-point game scoring the eventual game-winning goal to help lift No. 18 Penn State past Robert Morris, 4-2, in non-conference action this evening from PPG Paints Arena.
The Nittany Lions improve to 10-7-2 on the year while the Colonials fall to 5-10-1 overall.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Robert Morris opened the scoring on the man-advantage as Michael Louria ripped home a rebound from the left of the crease after Eric Israel's initial shot was saved at 13:11 of the first period for the 1-0 score.
- Penn State evened the game as Gobetz threaded the needle to sophomore classmate Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alb.) who one-touched a pass to sophomore Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) on the left of the crease for the easy goal and 1-1 tie at 4:52 of the second period.
- The Nittany Lions grabbed the lead midway through the middle frame as freshman Sam Sternschein (Syosset, N.Y.) tipped a shot from the point from classmate Alex Limoges (Winchester, Va.) that redirected past RMU net-minder Francis Marotte for the 2-1 advantage at 9:16.
- PSU then made it three straight goals in the second period as Gobetz fired home a shot from the low slot after Marotte poke-checked the puck away from junior Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) who was crashing toward the net for the 3-1 lead at 18:32.
- Sophomore Denis Smirnov (Moscow, Russia) extended the Nittany Lion lead early in the third period as he fired home a shot by classmate Kris Myllari (Kanata, Ont.) that was blocked and bounced hard off the end wall to the right side of the cage where Smirnov was waiting to bang it home on the power-play for the 4-1 edge just 36 seconds into the frame.
- Ferguson cut the Lion lead to 4-2 as he jammed home a rebound during a scrum in front of the net at 12:22 of the third period.
- Penn State extended the lead to 5-2 after Sturtz found junior Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) on an odd-man rush and the junior pulled the puck past the poke-check attempt from Marotte and slid it past his pad at 17:00 of the third period.
GOALTENDING
- Sophomore Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) stopped 28 shots to improve to 9-5-1 on the year as he secures his 32nd career victory to move into a tie with Matthew Skoff '16 for the most wins in Penn State history.
- Senior Matt Erlichman (Bedford, Pa.) played the final three minutes making his collegiate debut, but was not called upon to make a save
- Marotte falls to 5-7-1 on the year after making 37 saves for Bobby Mo.
NOTES
- Penn State runs its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2).
- The Nittany Lions held the 42-30 edge in shots and went 1-for-5 with the man-advantage while RMU was 1-for-4 on the power-play.
- Jones passes Eamon McAdam for second on the Penn State all-time saves list and now has 1,268 for his career.
- Biro extends his point streak to three games (1-3-4) while Limoges does the same to tie his career-high (1-3-4).
- Sturtz registered a pair of assists to extend his point-streak to five games (3-5-8), which is a season-high, and he now has 26 multi-point games for his career and eight this season.
- Gobetz secures his first-ever multi-point game as he notched one goal and one assist this evening.
- Berger nets the 30th goal of his career to move past David Glen '16 for sole possession of sixth on the Penn State all-time goals list. He is now just two points behind Casey Bailey for third all-time as he sits at 78.
