UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The No. 13 Penn State Nittany Lions were unable to complete a weekend sweep against No. 6 Ohio State as they dropped a 5-1 decision in Big Ten Conference action, snapping their 11-game unbeaten streak, this evening at Pegula Ice Arena.
PSU falls tro 13-8-3 overall with the loss and 6-5-3-2 in the Big Ten while the Buckeyes move to 15-5-4 on the year and 8-5-1-0 in conference play once again jumping the Lions into second place in the standings with 25 points to Penn State's 23.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ohio State jumped out to the early lead in this one as Tanner Laczynski finished off a nice feed by Freddy Gerard who skated past a Nittany Lion defenseman and slipped the puck through the crease for the easy finish at 5:08 of the first period.
- Penn State answered a sophomore James Gobetz (St. James, N.Y.) took the puck away from the Buckeyes at the blue line and skated all the way around the back of the net firing a shot on net and it was classmate Nikita Pavlychev (Yaroslavl, Russia) cleaned up the rebound for the 1-1 score at 12:53 of the opening frame.
- The Buckeyes regained the lead taking advantage of a five-minute major as Freddy Gerard lit the lamp on the power-play at 15:49 for the 2-1 lead. Penn State killed off the remainder of the major.
- OSU extended the lead to a pair of goals in the second period as Dakota Joshua was able to finish off a great feed from Gordi Myer during the power-play for the 3-1 edge at 7:03.
- Ohio State added a late empty net goal by Gerard at 19:27and Austin Pooley fired home a shot on a breakaway with just one second remaining in regulation for the final score.
GOALTENDING
Sophomore Peyton Jones (Langhorne, Pa.) falls to 12-6-2 after stopping 37 shots in the setback with Tommy Nappier remains unbeaten at 3-0-0 after securing 30 saves in his first career Big Ten start.
NOTES
- Tonight marked the 70th consecutive sellout at Pegula Ice Arena and the 85th overall out of 87 total games since the building opened before the start of the 2013-14 season. Penn State's all-time record at Pegula now stands at 50-28-9.
- Tonight marked the first time in the season series Ohio State scored the opening goal as Penn State drops to 5-6-0 on the year when allowing the opening goal.
- Penn State sees its 11-game unbeaten streak snapped. The streak was the second longest in program history and third best in the nation heading into tonight's contest.
- Junior Andrew Sturtz (Buffalo, N.Y.) and sophomore Brandon Biro (Sherwood Park, Alb.) see their career-best point-streaks of seven and nine games snapped.
- Junior Chase Berger (St. Louis, Mo.) and sophomore Nate Sucese (Fairport, N.Y.) also see their season-high five-game point-streaks each snapped.
- Penn State was outshot 42-31 in the game marking the first time they have been outshot in both games of a weekend series since January 8-9, 2016 against Minnesota.
- The Nittany Lions went 0-for-2 with the man-advantage snapping a streak of six straight games with at least one power-play goal.
- Ohio State went 2-for-5 with the man-advantage and were 4-for-9 in the series on the power-play.
